Alabama High School Team Preview: Albertville Aggies

PBR Alabama Staff

The 2021 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. That excitement may be at an all-time high entering this high school season as the 2020 high school baseball season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season during an offseason unlike any other and as always, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Montgomery at the AISA or AHSAA state championships but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason Top 10 in each AHSAA classification.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Outlook:

The Aggies enter 7A Area 7 play with a plethora of varsity experience returning but may be lacking one or two "shutdown" arms but will depend on pitchability on the bump. One proven returner is junior C Alex Johnson. He has been a varsity starter since his freshman year and will be a middle of the order bat while also being one of the team's leaders on and off the field. He has a solid understanding of the game to go along with his offensive and defensive skills. Another returning catcher in 2021 is senior Caleb Champion who will also see time on the mound as well. Caleb will hit in the middle of the lineup this season and is also an excellent receiver and blocker and has good power at the plate. 1B/RHP Tristin Golden returns for his junior season and will play 1B and pitch for the Aggies. He will be another big bat in the middle of the lineup. Speedy senior Tyler Lowery should lock down centerfield while also seeing valuable time on the mound. Lowery handles the bat well and is threat once he is on the bases. Senior RHP Landen Powell is a physical arm on the mound and will be the team's top pitcher this spring. He does a great job keeping the ball down in the zone and changes speeds well. He induces a lot of ground balls and is primed for a big senior season. Yet another senior, SS/RHP Ben Allen, is eactly what every coach wants in his program. A three sport star for the Aggies (QB in football, SG in basketball and SS in baseball), Allen is a big time competitor and also exudes high character and class on and off the field. His talent on the baseball field also speaks for itself as he will be one of the leaders for the Aggies this spring. Some of the younger Aggies that may play a role this year and in years to come are:

2023 SS/RHP Halen Painter: He will be the only sophomore on the varsity this season and will play SS and pitch. The sophomore still has some growing and strength to gain, but has a very high ceiling as a player.

2024 SS/OF/RHP Connor Lowery:  A freshman that as a big arm and handles the bat really well while also being a very instinctive player. He plays and excels at all 3 sports for the Aggies and has a very bright future and will have a big impact on the program in the years to come.

2024 OF/RHP Andy Howard: The freshman has a chance to hit in the middle of the varsity lineup as a freshman this season. Really shows a mature approach at the plate and does a nice job generating power. He will be a quarterback on the gridiron for the next 3 years and is a very good baseball player.

2025 OF/RHP Fonzie Davis, JrHas possibly the best arm in the baseball program as an 8th grader and can hammer baseballs. Really utilizes his stength and possesses several outstanding tools on the diamond. The 6'3 210 pound 2025 grad has a very high ceiling and could possibly see action on the varsity this year.

A strong nucleus of talented players should make the Aggies competitive in a wide open 7A Area 7 race.
