Alabama High School Team Preview: G.W. Carver Wolverines

PBR Alabama Staff

The 2021 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. That excitement may be at an all-time high entering this high school season as the 2020 high school baseball season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season during an offseason unlike any other and as always, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Montgomery at the AISA or AHSAA state championships but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason Top 10 in each AHSAA classification.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Outlook:

G. W. Carver will battle in 6A Area 3 with Lee- Montgomery, Sidney Lanier and Park Crossing. The Wolverines return 7 positional starters as well as 7 pitchers that saw time on the mound a season ago. The area race should be closely contested and the 2021 version of the Wolverines will depend on a few experienced returness. Senior LHP/OF TJ Blackmon is one of those returners and will be counted on in a dual role. The 2021 grad should throw a lot of big innings and will man an outfield spot when not on the mound. He should big a big contributor with the bat as well. Another two way senior that will help lead the 2021 squad is RHP/C Armante Davis.  The 5'9 190 pounder shows nice athleticism and has some definite arm strength on the mound and behind the plate. He is a tough out in the box and uses the whole field with the bat. Yet another senior two way talent is Deuntre Dunklin. He may not be the biggest guy on the field (5'7 160 lbs.) but is a superior athlete that runs very well. Dunklin makes difficult plays at 3B look return while showing a short, compact swing at the plate. Once on the bases he is definite steal threat. The shortstop position is in nice hands with senior BJ Officer manning that spot. Officer has some quick twitch actions and is a solid defender with the glove. The senior is another arm that the Wolverines will depend on this season. Junior TJ Fleming has a lanky build (6'3 170 lbs.) and a live arm when he toes the rubber and will also see time in the outfield as well. he does a nice job running balls down in the outfield and has some power with the bat as well. A young player, freshman OF/Utility player Jamar Green, can play a multitude of positions on the field and will be a valuable member of the team this year. Green is a "spark plug" type player that plays the game with some enthusiasm. These players will be key components for the Wolverines this year.
