Alabama High School Team Preview: Holtville Bulldogs

PBR Alabama Staff

The 2022 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Montgomery at the AISA or AHSAA state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason Top 10 in each AHSAA classification.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each AHSAA classification as well as a Power 25. One thing that you especially don’t want to miss are our scheduled podcasts with guests from across the state as well as recaps and previews of big games across the state.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook

The Holtville Bulldogs enjoyed a very successful 2021 campaign making it to the Elite 8 of the Class 5A Playoffs, but was eliminated in three games to St. Paul's Episcopal in a hard-fought series. The Bulldogs bring almost everyone back from that team and should be in the thick of it come playoff time.

There's a lot of experienced players returning for Holtville that have been playing together for a while now. SS Sam Silas comes back as the three-hole hitter & starting shortstop for the Bulldogs, and he's one of the top uncommitted players in the state in the junior class. OF/LHP Todd Wilson (Southern Union CC) brings plenty of versatility to this team, as he was at the top of the order last spring and went 11-1 on the mound. SS/RHP Drey Barrett (Southern Miss) had a huge summer on the circuit, and resulted in him committing to Southern Miss. He's another infielder they bring back that is sure to provide plenty of offensive production. OF Garrett Ingram (Southern Union CC) is a scrappy outfielder that plays the game really hard. He's a tough out in each at-bat and uses his athleticism well. Other names returning for the Bulldogs include 3B/RHP Tanner Potts, OF Westin Tubbs (50 stolen bases in 2021), C/OF Mikey Forney, LHP/1B Randy Davis, and bunch of other prospects that Holtville will rely on in 2022.

The Bulldogs will look to rely on some other guys that will step into a bigger role on the mound this spring, but with who they have coming back, there's plenty of reason to believe that Holtville will be towards the top of Class 5A in 2022.
