Alabama High School Team Preview: Baker Hornets

PBR Alabama Staff

The 2022 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Montgomery at the AISA or AHSAA state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason Top 10 in each AHSAA classification.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each AHSAA classification as well as a Power 25. One thing that you especially don’t want to miss are our scheduled podcasts with guests from across the state as well as recaps and previews of big games across the state.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook

The Baker Hornet bring back a very experienced roster with tons of depth across the board, giving Coach Minto & Co. plenty of optimism heading into 2022. They won their area last year, but was defeated by the eventual 7A State Champions in Auburn High School. This year, the Hornets are eager to get back and make a run throughout the 7A playoffs.

Starting off at the top, OF Jayven Williams is the engine that makes this offense go. He had an excellent junior season that saw him on the 7A 1st Team All State team and lead the team in batting average, stolen bases (37), OBP, hits and runs. He's a very athletic uncommitted player that has offers in both baseball and football. OF Carter Colvin & OF/RHP Brandon Cain (Coastal AL-North CC) return as the two power hitters in the heart of the lineup, as they finished tied for the lead in HR's last year. INF/OF Landon Lary (Coastal AL-North CC) will be one of the leaders on this team after starting for the Hornets at multiple position over the past three years.

RHP/INF Breyton Cornelius (University of Mobile) & RHP Ryan Kelley both return after being two of the better arms from last year's team. Both were towards the top of each pitching statistical category, and will look to build off strong seasons into this year. RHP Bradley Day (Coastal AL-North CC) is a key arm on this staff after leading the Hornets in appearances with 22 and posting a .180 opponent batting average. INF/RHP Cole Daigle was the starting shortstop last spring and led the team in RBI's. He's got multiple offers to play at the next level. The Hornets also get back a key arm in LHP Tyler Sirmon (Bishop State CC) after he missed the season last year due to injury, unfortunately. There aren't many teams in the state that return as many experience players as Baker does, and that should bode well for success in 2022.
