Alabama High School Team Preview: Florala Wildcats

PBR Alabama Staff

The 2021 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. That excitement may be at an all- time high entering this high school season as the 2020 high school baseball season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season during an offseason unlike any other and as always, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Montgomery at the AISA or AHSAA state championships but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason Top 10 in each AHSAA classification.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Outlook:

The Florala Wildcats return severel key components on the mound for the 2021 season and hopes are high as the season nears. The pitching depth and the offensive production should both be strengths for the team as they battle in 1A Area 2. Four returning players should help lead the way, one of those returnees is senior RHP Hagen Hughes. The righthander shows a quick arm action with a fastball in the lower 80's. He has recorded a large amount of strikeouts over the last 2 seasons. Another senior, LHP/CF Dixon Drakkar missed the 2020 season due to injury but has been a 4 year starter on the varsity and will be counted on in the outfield and on the mound. Sophomore 1B/RHP Seth Bundy also returns after starting as a freshman a year and the physically built 2023 grad will be counted on to be a run producer in the Wildcat lineup. Another sophomore, SS John Howell, returns after starting as a freshman and should help solidify the Wildcat defense up the middle. Judd Goolsby is another sophomore that started as a freshman that returns and will see time behind the plate and on the mound. Goolsby is on pace to have a big year with the bat and on the mound. An eight grader, 3B/RHP/UTL Dalton Jackson, is a transfer player that will immediately help in the middle of the line up as he shows some big time power off the bat in his 6'3 230 lb. frame. Look for Jackson to vie for some important innings on the mound this year as well. There is a lot to look forward to this year for the Florala Wildcats.
