Alabama High School Team Preview: Gordo Greenwave

PBR Alabama Staff

The 2021 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. That excitement may be at an all-time high entering this high school season as the 2020 high school baseball season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season during an offseason unlike any other and as always, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Montgomery at the AISA or AHSAA state championships but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason Top 10 in each AHSAA classification.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Weaknesses: Not much depth, inexperience

Top Returning Players:

2022 RHP Ben Capps

2022 C Lawson Neel

2022 INF Tanner Bailey

Outlook:

The Greenwave may lack a bit of experience but a few key returners should definitely lead the way in 2021.  These juniors will also be showing a talented group of newcomers the ropes in 4A Area 6 as they battle American Christian Academy, Holt and Northside. Junior Ben Capps will be one of those leaders as he will be counted on as a RHP and 3B. The athletic Capps has a physicla build (6'0 185 lbs.) and will be at the top of the Greenwave rotation. Capps simply attacks hitters and seems to be able to locate to any part of the zone with all of his pitches. No doubt he lives off a mid 80's fastball that shows some late sinking action. He should also be a big run producer at the plate this season. 2022 C Lawson Neel is a very solid defender behind the plate and shows a very strong arm (sub 2.0 pop times) to the bag at 2B. He will be called on to assist in slowing down opponents' running games. He shows some strength in the hands at the plate with power to the pullside gap. Neel is an athletic, hard nosed player to keep an eye on. Speaking of athletic players, junior infielder Tanner Bailey fits that mold. He shows plenty of range on the infield and has plenty of arm strength across the dirt. He can handle the bat very well and can drive the ball to all parts of the field. Not only is Bailey a big time baseball player, he is also the Greenwave QB on the gridiron in the fall. He has seen his football recruitmnent pick up exponentially and has received scholarship offers from a lot P5 Division 1 schools, including most schools in the SEC. The Greenwave do have some talent that will make for an intriguing 2021 season.
