Alabama High School Team Preview: Millry Wildcats

PBR Alabama Staff

The 2021 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. That excitement may be at an all- time high entering this high school season as the 2020 high school baseball season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season during an offseason unlike any other and as always, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Montgomery at the AISA or AHSAA state championships but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason Top 10 in each AHSAA classification.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Outlook:

The 1A Millry Wildcats will be heading into the 2021 season with a fair amount of inexperience after their top three arms on the mound. With that being said, don't count the Wildcats out as they have shown a winning formula over the years. One of those returning pitchers is junior RHP/INF Owen Hendry (6'3.5 180 lbs). The tall junior has a really good arm that shows a good deal of arm side action on a fastball that sits mid 80's and may bump the upper 80's. Hendry also shows solid control on all three of his pitches (FB, CB, CH) while also doubling as a run producing infielder when he is not on the mound. Brayson Odom is another junior that really lives off the fastball. The pitch shows some "heaviness" in the low 80's as hitters have a hard time really squaring him up. The breaking ball is also a quality pitch as it shows "swing and miss" stuff. Odom will also man an infield spot when not on the mound. Senior RHP/OF Braedon Waite (6'3 190 lbs.) will be patrolling the outfield this year as he should also be a major run producer for the Wildcats. While he will be in the outfield, there is no doubt that he is another quality arm for the Wildcats. While he is still a bit "raw" on the mound, the fastball shows some life in the low to mid 80's as Waite just likes to attack hitters. No doubt, Millry will depend heavily on all three of these two way guys but will also be depending on some newcomers as only 2 positional starters return from 2020.
