Alabama High School Team Preview: Cherokee County Warriors

PBR Alabama Staff

The 2022 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Montgomery at the AISA or AHSAA state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason Top 10 in each AHSAA classification.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each AHSAA classification as well as a Power 25. One thing that you especially don’t want to miss are our scheduled podcasts with guests from across the state as well as recaps and previews of big games across the state.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook

The Cherokee County Warriors come in to the spring of 2022 hoping that experience and some key returners will lead them to success. The Warriors won their area last spring and reached the 2nd Round of the 4A State Playoffs before being eliminated by North Jackson. They do, however, return almost everyone from that 2021 squad, giving the Warriors high hopes for 2022.

Cherokee County brings back an impressive offense from last year that saw them hit over the .300 mark as a team. Leading the way again in 2022, 1B Connor Wilson will be looked upon again by the Warriors for some of the same offensive production he had last year. In his sophomore year in 2021, Wilson posted a .470 batting average and also recorded five home runs. He's an undeniable presence in the heart of the order and is poised for another standout spring. Another returning offensive threat for the Warriors coming back in 2022 will be 1B/OF Walker Pruett. Pruett is a senior returning for his third year at the varsity level that hit .385 last spring, and also swiped 30 bags in the process. Like Pruett, 3B/RHP Tristan Whitefield is another returning senior that enjoyed the same type of success in 2021. Whitefield is back for his final year of his high school career after hitting .360 with 15 stolen bases. All three of these returners should lead the way for this Warrior offense.

On the mound for Cherokee County, RHP/OF Daegen Scott should be one of the top arms for this staff as a junior. Last spring as a sophomore, Scott led the team in wins, strikeouts & posted the best WHIP of anyone on the team. He's made some sizable strides in terms of velocity and should be a quality arm this spring for the Warriors. MIF Jeb Crane is one of the few underclassmen that Cherokee County will rely on with almost everyone returning from last year. Although a sophomore, Crane is one of the leaders on the team and should pace the offense at the top of the Warriors' order. Expect another successful season for Cherokee County as they attempt to make another run throughout the Class 4A State Playoffs.
