Alabama High School Team Preview: Edgewood Academy Wildcats

PBR Alabama Staff

The 2022 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Montgomery at the AISA or AHSAA state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason Top 10 in each AHSAA classification.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each AHSAA classification as well as a Power 25. One thing that you especially don’t want to miss are our scheduled podcasts with guests from across the state as well as recaps and previews of big games across the state.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook

The Edgewood Academy Wildcats are coming off a historic season in 2021 and are looking to continue to build off that in 2022. Last spring, the Wildcats reached the AISA Class AA State Championship but were unfortunately defeated by Autauga in a two really close games. The Wildcats should rely on their talented pitching this spring to carry them back to Montgomery.

As mentioned above, the Wildcats return some quality arms that should have some success this spring. RHP Walker Hall is a junior that should be one of their go-to guys on the mound. Hall has multiple pitches in his arsenal that he can throw for strikes, making him a tough matchup for any hitter. LHP/OF Logan Moomey will be asked to step into a large role this spring for Edgewood Academy. He's a freshman that is one of their key returners on the mound. Like Hall, Moomey has multiple pitches that he can throw for strikes and gets good arm-side run on his fastball. He'll be asked to pitch some significant innings this spring. 3B JT Brazell is one of the top hitters coming back for this offense who will be counted on for the bulk of the offensive production. He's got really fast hands at the plate with good and is solid all-around defensively.

A couple other upperclassmen to keep an eye out for this spring will be RHP Jack Balda & RHP/UTL Bradley Boone. Balda is a senior who has a live arm and does a good job of keeping the ball down in the zone to force weak contact, while Boone is another top arm that is also an athletic player that can play anywhere defensively. With these players coming back in 2022, the Wildcats looked primed for another deep run in the AISA Class AA State Playoffs.
