Alabama High School Team Preview: Sparkman Senators

PBR Alabama Staff

The 2022 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Montgomery at the AISA or AHSAA state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason Top 10 in each AHSAA classification.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each AHSAA classification as well as a Power 25. One thing that you especially don’t want to miss are our scheduled podcasts with guests from across the state as well as recaps and previews of big games across the state.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook

The Sparkman Senators should once again be one of the more talented team in North Alabama in Class 7A with plenty of returners coming back from last year's team that was so close to reaching the Final Four. After winning a really tough area, the Senators beat Spain Park in three games in the first round, but ultimately fell by score of 9-8 in Game 3 of the Elite 8 against Florence.

Losing a player like RHP/UTL AJ Causey (Signed with Jacksonville State) is extremely difficult to replace, but it looks the like Senators have enough pieces to help fill that void on the mound and at the plate. SS Tucker Burns (Wallace-Hanceville, 2022) is a two-year starter at shortstop and should be one of the leaders for this team in his senior year. Burns is a really solid defender up the middle with quality bat that should hit towards the top of the order. RHP Patrick Moody is a right-hander with a side-arm delivery and was a consistent as they come last year for the Senators. He has excellent command for all pitches and is a touch matchup for any hitter. RHP/UTL Ryan Strachan (2023) is the top uncommitted junior in Alabama with some of the best two-way potential in his class. Strachan has been up to 90 mph on the mound and has gap-to-gap power from the right side. RHP/UTL Jacob Haley (South Alabama, 2023) is another two-way player, similar to Strachan, who has also been up to 90 mph and handles the bat well from the right side. OF/C Jack Buening (2023) is the top returning hitter in terms of extra bases, as he led the Senators in doubles and home runs as a sophomore. RHP/1B Carter Wells (2023) & RHP/1B Jordan Pearce (2022) have logged quality innings on the mound in the past, and can get into the upper-80's with their fastballs.

The Senators will rely on a pair of seniors in OF Chris Sims (2022) & OF Jacob Green (Oglethorpe, 2022) to cover ground in the outfield early on in the season, while players like UTL Nick Causey (2023), RHP Ethan Clark (2023), C Wyatt Shears (2024) & RHP Ryan Everly (2024) are all sure to make an impact in a variety of ways. Expect the Senators to once again be back in the middle of Class 7A towards the end of the season.
