All-State Games: Preview

Austin Sharp
Alabama Scouting Director

The Alabama All-State Games will be held this Tuesday, June 8th, at Riddle-Pace Field at Troy University. This event is the third of its kind, with the two previous events being held at the University of Alabama in 2018 & 2019. With roughly 50 players attending each of the of the last two All-State Games, a combined 43 players have gone on to commit/sign with various college programs. Many of the top uncommitted 2022-2025 prospects in the state of Alabama will be in attendance, looking to impress in front of the many college coaches who will be in attendance with the NCAA dead period recently being lifted. CLICK HERE to view the roster & teams for this event.

Our staff will be using this event to select players to represent Alabama at the 2021 PBR Future Games. The Future Games is the summer's ultimate recruiting event for 2023 and 2024 uncommitted prospects. Last year's event was attended by more than 300 college coaches. This event will take place July 29 - August 1 at LakePoint in Cartersville, GA.

Upon arriving and getting checked in at 8:15-8:40 AM, position players will go through extended in/out defensive practice, and then take batting practice before taking place in gameplay against pitchers. During batting practice, players will be using our Blast Motion sensors, as well as a Trackman B1 Unit to record numbers that will be imported into their profiles for college coaches to see.

Names to Know..

+ OF Coleman Mizell (Hartselle, 2023) is an Alabama recruit who comes into this event after a strong sophomore campaign for Hartselle that reached the 6A State Finals. Strong, athletic 6-3, 215 pounder with plenty of tools across the board. Left-handed hitter with 6.83 speed and power to all fields in the box. Former Future Gamer in 2019 that should continue to evolve as a prospect with a good showing at this event and over the next couple of years.

+ RHP Josh Gunther (Bayside Academy, 2023) cemented himself as a top-caliber arm in the 2023 class with the year he had as a sophomore for the Admirals. The ace for the rotation, Gunther twirled multiple no-hitter's and put up some big strikeout numbers in the process. Runs the fastball into the upper-80's, and compliments it with a sharp slider with ~2400 spin.

+ RHP Jackson Chancey (GW Long, 2022) is a prospect that has flown under the radar, but he really jumped out at the 2A State Finals in Montgomery this spring. Fastball reach 90 mph in his start, while comfortable sitting in the upper-80's in the outing. Possesses a live arm at 6-0, 190-pounds that could really see his recruitment process take off with a great showing on Tuesday.

+ 3B Braden Booth (Bob Jones, 2024) is a 6-1, 170-pound corner infielder who has been as steady as they come as a hitter in the rising sophomore class. Big chance for more power down the road, but has already shown the ability to hit for average at each look. Still more room for growth, and should stick at the hot corner defensively with a big arm that has reached 88 mph on the bump.

+ C Jack Holley (Spanish Fort, 2024) is regarded as one of, if not the, best defensive catchers in the 2024 class in Alabama in terms of catch-&-throw skills, receiving and clocking behind the plate. 5-11, 165-pounder with some athleticism and flexibility packed into the frame. Showed plenty of hard-hit line drives at the plate at a scout day last summer, and will look to top his performance from that event with a good showing here.

+ SS/RHP Gatlin Pitts (Bayside Academy, 2024) packs a punch from the right side of the plate using a 5-10, 170-pound frame. Flashed some power this spring and was one of the key contributors in the middle of the lineup that led the Admirals to the 3A State Finals. Also ran the fastball up to 86 mph with high spin on the breaking ball, and it will be interesting to see how he performs at his first PBR event this Tuesday.

+ RHP Chase Ambrose (Buckhorn, 2023) played a year up with Team Alabama at last year's PBR Future Games, and he's added a few more ticks on the fastball over the past year. Got to see him last week at LakePoint Sports comfortable sitting 86-89 mph with hard run into right-handed hitters with more strikes. Also uses a tight slider and a power changeup as his secondary offerings. Really quick arm with more maturity likely to come in the future.

+ C Noah Blackburn (Mobile Christian, 2025) is one of the few rising freshman attending this event looking to have a standout showing at Troy. 5-10, 170-pound frame that got some at-bat's as an eight-grader on a loaded Mobile Christian squad that swept the 4A State Finals. Strong hands with power potential at the plate with solid skills defensively. Should be one of the top backstops in the young Class of 2025.

+ 3B/RHP Jake DeValk (Bayside Academy, 2023) had jumped to our staff as an arm at the Preseason All-State event this January with a fastball that reached 88 mph, but the stick has really come on this spring for the Admirals. Had a big showing at the plate in terms of extra base hits with a home run and a double in Game 2 of the series. 6-3, 190-pound body with quick, physical hands and a strong lower-half.

+ 1B Sheldon Ott (Houston Academy, 2022) had a stellar showing this past week over at LakePoint Sports Complex, as he seemed to barrel up every ball he made contact with. Left-handed hitter with with tons of strength in a 6-5, 225-pound frame. Sprays the ball to all fields with power, as he went backside double in one at-bat, then left the yard the CF in the next at-bat. Has gotten off to a strong start this summer, and will look to continue to trend upward on Tuesday.

+ C/3B Jack Hayes (Piedmont, 2023) was another player who looked the part last week playing in a tournament at LakePoint Sports Complex. Mainstay in the middle of the order for powerhouse Piedmont since his middle school years. Thick, well-built 5-11, 190-pounder that looks like a catcher. Also plays quarterback for the Bulldogs in the fall. Will look to continue his impressive summer this Tuesday at Troy in his first PBR showcase.

+ RHP Banks Langston (Russellville, 2023) has always been in the Top-30 in Alabama in the Class of 2023 as a two-way player, but the arm has really taken off over the past year. Athletic 6-0, 160-pounder that works comfortably in the mid-80's, and has seen the fastball bump 87 mph this January. Athletic skill set with 6.70 speed. Already has D1 offers/interest, and will look to add more with a good showing this week.

+ 3B/RHP Lane Griggs (Glenwood School, 2023) is an infielder with compact strength in a 5-10, 180-pound frame. Right-handed hitter that started off the spring on a tear at the plate, and has continued that into the summer. Quick, short stroke with a level plane through the zone and has benefitted with added strength over the past year. Has also reportedly been into the upper-80's as of late.

+ RHP Zach Stevens (Stanhope Elmore, 2023) is another player that attended the Preseason All-State event in January and showcased a live fastball that was up to 88 mph at the event. Also features a sharp breaking ball with 2500 spin that induced plenty of swing and miss at a look this spring. Pitched a ton of quality innings for a talented Stanhope Elmore team this year. Rising junior that will look to continue to elevate his status as a prospect this Tuesday.
