Birmingham Preseason ID: Quick Hits

PELHAM, AL - The Birmingham Preseason ID was held on Wednesday, January 4th at GeauxPlay Sports in Pelham, AL. This event was an open event that consisted of prospects from the 2023-2026 classes. These players went through extended pro-style workout that included batting practice using Trackman and Blast Motion, ran the 30 yard dash using Swift Performance, and much more. Pitchers were able to throw in simulated bullpens during the workout and were able to get numbers and metrics off of our Trackman unit, such as pitch velocity, spin rate, horizontal & vertical movement & much more. There were some players who showed up and continued to build off of prior performances, but there were also some new names who jumped onto our radar with a strong showing on Wednesday.

Kicking off our post-event coverage for this event, we take a look back at some of the top performers and standouts from Wednesday. Continuing over the course of the next week or so, we will release different statistical leaderboards for the event then transition into releasing individual scouting reports for each player in attendance.

 

+ INF Andrew Petrock (Pelham, 2026) was a name to know coming into this event and certainly made a lasting impression in his PBR showcase debut. Ranked inside the Top-10 in the young freshman class, Petrock turned in a professional round of BP while hammering the back net of the cage with nearly every pass from the right side of the plate. Standing a narrow, upright stance, Petrock uses a simple stride to get back down on time and fires a quick and accurate barrel through the zone. The young freshman found firm contact with nearly every swing producing many upper-80's EV with a top EV at 91.7 mph. With a smaller frame that will continue to carry more strength over the next few years, he packs a punch in the right side of the box and is a definite prospect to follow in the coming years. Petrock has shown he has advanced abilities and should only continue to get better as he grows and matures into his frame.

+ 3B Garrett Calhoun (Handley, 2023) continued to elevate his status as a quality uncommitted hitter in the senior class with a strong showing at yesterday's event. After being a top performer at this fall's AL/TN Unsigned Senior Showcase, the right-handed hitter put on strong display of gap-to-gap pop in his round of BP with consistent mid-90 EV's back up the middle and to the pull side. He attacks the ball in the zone with a mostly flat path to contact and does a good job of staying through the ball with a strong 6-foot-1, 190-pound frame. The senior shows some elite bat and hand speed, per Blast Motion. He continues to establish himself as a must-follow this spring for any college program looking to add another potential middle-of-the-order hitting corner infielder to the 2023 recruiting class.

+ 1B Reece Mims (Helena, 2024) made a name for himself last spring as a consistent run-producer for the 6A Helena Huskies and continued to show some intriguing power at yesterday's event. Using a physical frame, the uncommitted junior continuously struck deep blasts to the pull side during his round of BP resulting in a max EV at 99.7 mph. The ball jumps off of Mims' barrel while taking aggressive swings from the right side of the plate with elite bat speed. He certainly fits the role of a future middle-of-the-order power threat as he blasted five home runs last spring as a freshman in one of the best classifications in the state, and will be looking for another big spring in 2023.

+ 1B/RHP Micah Morris (Shelby County, 2024) is a prospect who is back to full strength after missing most of last year due to injury and looks poised for a strong junior campaign this spring both at the plate and on the mound. Standing a lean 6-foot-0, 155-pounds, he still has a chance to add strength and continue to grow into his frame. The uncommitted junior looked comfortable during his round of BP hitting from the right side with a repeatable swing that consistently produced line drives back up the middle. On the mound, he also showed some intriguing stuff working up to 86 mph with a loose, whippy arm while still working back from his injury. He'll certainly play a two-way role for the Wildcats this spring and is a good one to know to keep an eye on this spring.

+ C Easton Kleyn (Gardendale, 2024) is another prospect that continues to build off of prior performances with a quality outing a yesterday's event. Listed at 6-foot-1, 195-pounds, the uncommitted junior displayed some prowess with the bat, as he showed the ability to use the whole field in his approach while attacking the ball with a mostly flat path through the zone. He does a good job of staying short throughout his swing and keeping his barrel through the zone to find hard contact to both gaps. He's continued to make strides to his frame, and looked a bit more athletic in this viewing. Behind the plate defensively, Kleyn is a quiet receiver and moves well laterally while being able to stick the pitch low in the zone. He's another uncommitted prospect in the junior class to keep an eye on this spring for the Rockets.
