East Coast Sox Scout Day Preview: Pitchers

Austin Sharp
Director of Scouting

We are excited to kick off the 2020 summer season with the East Coast Sox Scout Day, one of the premier travel ball organizations in the country. This event was originally scheduled to take place at Shelton State CC in Tuscaloosa, AL, but was recently changed to Q.V. Sykes Park in Meridian, Mississippi. The event will be one of our biggest to date, as there will roughly be 50 players in each session. Be sure to follow along on our Twitter (@PBR_Alabama) for pre-event, during the event, and post-event coverage. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to check out the itinerary for June 4th.

Prep Baseball Report is committed to providing a safe environment for all players and PBR staff in attendance. Social distancing and other guidelines will be followed strictly and thoroughly. Each player will have their own “safe zone” that will be six feet apart from each other. Dugouts will not be used and there will be numerous hand sanitizing stations throughout the complex and on the field.

Today, we want to take a look at some of the top primary pitchers that will be in attendance at the East Coast Sox Scout Day. This group is composed of players from Alabama, Mississippi, and Pennsylvania. In addition to these, we are certain there will be other talented pitchers on hand.

PRIMARY Pitchers:

’22 LHP/OF Steven Cash, Bibb County

Young LHP that really shows high pitchability. The term “crafty” comes to mind watching him pitch. Showed an easy delivery with solid mechanics. The FB was 76- 78 mph and topped at 79 mph with spin rates in the mid 1800’s. The breaking ball showed spin rates in the mid 1700 range at 60-62 mph. The CH shows solid deception and tumble away from RH hitters at 66-67 mph. He does a nice job of creating vertical and horizontal movement on the mound. ‘22 grad that knows how to pitch.

PBR AL Ranking: #28

’21 RHP Austin Cornelius, Hoover

Whippy ¾ slot that showed a very quick arm and legit ASR into RH hitters. Showed solid feel with a nice 3 pitch mix. The slider showed really nice spin and the changeup really tumbled into RH hitters. This is a high upside ‘21 RHP. The FB was up to 83 mph with action and the power slider was 73 mph. The change up sat 74-76 mph in both innings. RHP that has really made significant strides since last year.

 PBR AL Ranking: #56

’22 RHP Colin Daniel, Corner

An intriguing young arm that we are excited to see this Thursday. Athletic build at 6-foot-1 180 pounds. Fastball can play in mid 80’s with some run into RHH’s. Clean mechanics and the ball comes out clean. Secondary pitches play well off the fastball and can throw for strikes. One to watch this summer.

PBR AL Ranking: #29

’22 RHP/3B Brice Deaton, Pontotoc (MS)

Good looking young prospect with room for projection over the next few years. 6-foot-4 205 pounder that projects to be a starter on the mound. In an event in January, his fastball was primarily 82-83 mph with some sink into RHH’s. Breaking ball shows depth and can be landed for strikes. Changeup plays well off the fastball with fade to his arm side. Room for more in this 2022 grad.

PBR MS Ranking: #19

’21 RHP Colby Holcombe, Central

Really excited to see this big right-handed arm on the mound this Thursday. Will be surprised if you can find a more physically imposing presence on the mound. At 6-foot-7 240 pounds, Holcombe can run his fastball into the upper 80’s. Secondary pitches show potential. An interesting ‘21 grad to follow.

PBR AL Ranking: #37

’21 RHP/SS Aidan Major, Central Mountain (PA)

Very talented player with two-way potential. On the bump the right-hander has an explosive delivery with obvious arm talent. Ran it up to 87 mph with an above average breaking ball. At the plate he has a smooth, efficient load with a nice, level stroke through the zone. Similar to delivery swing is explosive and generates easy gap abilities with signs of power to come down the road. Recently clocked at 90 mph on the mound this spring. High follow.

Commitment: West Virginia

PBR PA Ranking: #20

’21 RHP/1B Mason Nichols, Jackson Prep (MS)

Projectable frame at 6-foot-4, 185-pounds with plenty of room to continue to fill out. The sophomore right hander works from a high ¾ arm slot with clean, compact arm action and  smooth repeatable delivery. Fastball sat 80-82 mph, topped at 83, thrown for strikes. Curveball has 11-5 shape with depth at 68-70 and was in the zone. Pitched for 4.1 innings throwing 68 percent strikes, allowed four runs on four hits while walking one and striking out five in gameplay last spring.

Commitment: Ole Miss

PBR MS Ranking: #11

PBR National Ranking: #489

’23 RHP/3B Ben Pearman, Thompson

Made a big jump into the Top 10 in the recent ‘23 Rankings update. 6-foot-2 200 pounder that shows potential on the mound. Features a low-to-mid 80’s fastball with a solid secondary arsenal. Breaking ball shows late bit. Straight over the top delivery. One to watch this Thursday.

PBR AL Ranking: #9
