Mizuno Pitcher & Player of the Week: Week 6

PBR Alabama Staff

Each week during the high school season, we will be announcing the Mizuno Pitcher and Player of the Week for that particular week. Numerous players across the state continue to put up impressive numbers both as position players and pitchers on the mound. This year we will be selecting one Pitcher of the Week and one Player of the Week based on nominations from high school coaches across the state. Thanks to Mizuno for sponsoring both awards this season.

Check out our scout blog HERE for games our staff was able to get out and see this past week.

Thanks to the many high school coaches that sent in nominations this week.

New this year will be our Alabama Diamond Notes that we will release each Tuesday. Our Diamond Notes will highlight other players nominated by high school coaches that are deserving of recognition that were not named Mizuno Pitcher or Player of the Week. Look for that tomorrow.

Let's take a look at the Mizuno Player and Pitcher of the Week for Week 6 (March 28- April 2):

Breyton Cornelius

Class of 2022 / 3B

Player Information

  • Graduating Class: 2022
  • Primary Position: 3B
    Secondary Position: RHP
  • High School: Baker
    State: AL
  • Height: 6-1
    Weight: 193lbs
  • Bat/Throw: R/R

stats from week 6

Cornelius had a week that will be hard to replicate by anyone. The University of Mobile recruit went 1-0 on the mound as he threw seven innings, allowing five hits and one earned run with six strikeouts. While those are impressive numbers, that is not the main reason the senior first baseman is being honored this week. Offensively, Cornelius hit .667 (6-9) on the week as all six hits went for home runs with two of those long blasts going for grand slams. He scored nine runs and also drove in a total of 19 runs during the week.

Jack Sanderson

Class of 2024 / LHP

Player Information

  • Graduating Class: 2024
  • Primary Position: LHP
    Secondary Position: OF
  • High School: Northridge
    State: AL
  • Summer Team: East Coast Sox Franchise
  • Height: 6-4
    Weight: 185lbs
  • Bat/Throw: L/L

Stats from week 6

Sanderson, a sophomore Auburn commit, came up big for the Jaguars in an important area game on Thursday against Hillcrest. In the 6-0 win, the southpaw went all seven innings to get the complete game shutout. He allowed only two hits and walked only one as he was in total control throughout the game. The Jaguars scored three runs in the first inning which allowed Sanderson the opportunity to settle in nicely as he struck out 18 hitters on the night.
