PBR at The Performance Lab: Pitcher Only's/Catchers

The PBR at The Performance Lab event was held on Tuesday, July 6th in Mobile, AL. Players were put through a positional workout in the morning and pitchers were able to throw extended bullpens on the mound. Today, we begin to take a look at each player in attendance as we begin our individual scout analysis from last Tuesday's event. Several other position players also pitched and their pitching notes will be included in their positional analysis. 

Throughout the week we will continue our positional breakdown of all of the players in attendance, but today, let's take a look at the pitcher only's and catchers from the event.  

 

PITCHER ONLY'S/CATCHERS

Charlie Berryman, RHP, (2023) Mountain Brook, AL
5-foot-11, 175-pound athletic frame. On the mound, has above average arm speed and throws from an over-the-top arm slot. Uses some effort in his delivery. Threw his fastball 87-88 mph and topped out at 89 mph; shows sinking action with heavy feel to it. (Max spin 1784; Avg 1674). Throws a 10/4 breaking ball with minimal, short action (70-74). (Max spin 1581; Avg 1403). His changeup (74-75) showed sinking action.

Caleb Campbell, C/3B, (2022) Brooks, AL
5-foot-9, 180-pound physical build. In the box, Campbell had a max exit velocity of 94 mph. (72.68 mph bat speed average). (23.28 mph hand speed average). Begins in a balanced stance with a controlled load, then uses a small leg kick stride. Had an uphill swing plane, and his bat speed was explosive. He barreled up lots of balls with some loud contact. Gap to gap approach. While catching, he made throws to second at velocities up to 74 mph; had average footwork, and a clean exchange. Recorded pop times ranging from 2.01-2.10. Had a short arm action with a high ¾ slot. Solid uncommitted rising senior.

Colin Dalton, C/1B, (2022) McGill Toolen, AL
6-foot-2, 197-pound solid frame. In the box, Dalton recorded an exit velocity of 90 mph. (66.33 mph bat speed average). (21.35 mph hand speed average). Started in a wide, open stance with a quick load, then used a leg kick stride. Has average bat speed and flat swing plane through the zone. Found some barrels through his round while using a middle approach. While catching, he produced a position velocity of 70 mph during throw downs to second; had average footwork, and consistent hands. had consistent pop times of 2.23-2.26. Narrow wide setup with some flexibility. Had a quick arm action and decent accuracy to the bag.

Eli Driskell, RHP, (2024) Baker, AL
5-foot-11, 175-pound slim frame. Projectable on the mound, showed good arm speed, also used an over-the-top arm slot with a very quick arm action. Up-tempo type pitcher and uses some effort. Threw his fastball 85-86 mph with a max of 87 mph; shows arm side command and played best when elevated in the zone. (Max spin 2327; Avg 2235). Had hard action on his 11/5 curveball (63-64). (Max spin 2423; Avg 2322). His heavy changeup (74-75) has arm side control. Has tight action on his 10/4 slider (69-71). (Max spin 2313; Avg 2313).

Pierce Edwards, C/OF/RHP, (2023) Glenwood, AL
6-foot, 175-pound. During batting practice, the right-handed hitter recorded an exit velocity of 91 mph. (66.43 mph bat speed average). (21.07 mph hand speed average). Setup includes a balanced stance and a controlled stride. Bat speed is above average and exhibits a flat swing plane. He found multiple barrels in his round. Line drive approach. From the outfield, his best throws to the bases were registered at 87 mph; shows fluid footwork. While catching, he made strong throws to second and produced an efficient position velocity of 80 mph; has consistent hands, a quick exchange, and quick feet. showed his ability to throw runners out with an efficient pop times of 1.95-2.16. Showcases some flexibility. Showed an-over-the-top slot with a quick arm action. On the mound, showed a compact arm action and a high ¾ arm angle with above average arm speed. Uses decent effort in his delivery. Athletic balance point. Produced a fastball that came in at 84-85 mph and topped out at 86 mph; has sinking action with heavy movement. (Max spin 2001; Avg 1900). He has fading action on his changeup (74-75). His 10/4 slider shows tight action. (Max spin 2159; Avg 2159).

Forrest Gunnison, RHP, (2022) Fairhope, AL
6-foot-1, 195-pound solid frame. On the mound, showed good arm speed, also used a high ¾ arm slot with a compact arm action. Up-tempo type pitcher and shows high effort. Produced a fastball that came in at 83-85 mph. Had sinking action. (Max spin 1976; Avg 1867). He had slurvey action on his curveball (70-71). (Max spin 2243; Avg 1953). His changeup (76-77) shows fading action. His slider shows tight action with short break. (Max spin 2314; Avg 2178).

Dylan Lindsey, C/3B, (2023) Mcgill Toolen Catholic, AL
6-foot, 190-pound. During batting practice, the right-handed hitter had an exit velocity of 87 mph. (63.41 mph bat speed average). (20.03 mph hand speed average). Started in an open stance with a controlled load, then used a leg kick stride. Bat speed was average, and used a flat swing plane. He barreled up some balls. Line drive approach. Behind the plate, he produced a position velocity of 72 mph during throw downs; had choppy footwork. displayed his ability to control the run game with a pop time of 1.99-2.05. Average flexibility and staggered setup. Some accuracy to the bases, used a high ¾ slot with a short arm action.

Alex Sherman, RHP, (2024) UMS-Wright Preparatory, AL
6-foot-2, 185-pound projectable frame. On the mound, showed quick arm speed, he had a high ¾ arm angle with a loose arm action. Drop-and-drive type pitcher and shows some effort. Lands soft. Sat with his fastball at 82-84 mph and topped out at 85 mph; had arm side control. (Max spin 2203; Avg 2110). Throws a sharp curveball (72-73). (Max spin 2317; Avg 2236). His changeup (75-76) had fading action.

Sutton Snypes, LHP, (2023) UMS-Wright, AL
6-foot-1, 175-pound proportional frame. On the mound, showing good arm speed he had a high ¾ arm angle with a compact arm action. Drop-and-drive type pitcher and shows easy effort. Threw his fastball 79-80 mph; had arm side control and running action. (Max spin 2084; Avg 1769). His slider (68-70) shows command low in the zone and slurvey action. (Max spin 1680; Avg 1680).

Caleb Stewart, C, (2022) Murphy, AL
6-foot-1, 180-pound athletic frame. During batting practice, Stewart had a max exit velocity of 87 mph. (57.20 mph bat speed average). (20.56 mph hand speed average). Setup consists of an open, active stance and a toe tap stride. Had an uphill swing plane, and his bat speed was average. He barreled up some balls throughout the round. Pull side approach. Behind the plate, he made throws to second at velocities up to 72 mph; shows quick footwork, and a clean exchange. Displayed some solid catching ability with 1.98-2.11 pop times. Had staggered setup. Used a short arm action with a high ¾ slot while showing decent accuracy to the base.

Jack Stowers, C/1B, (2023) St. Paul's Episcopal, AL
6-foot-2, 188-pound sturdy build. At the plate, the right-handed hitter had an exit velocity of 89 mph. (65.98 mph bat speed average). (21.34 mph hand speed average). Started in a wide, closed stance and had a quick short stride. Had developing bat speed and an uphill swing plane. Found multiple barrels through his rounds. Gap to gap approach. While catching, throw downs to second were maxed at 70 mph; had smooth footwork. had a pop time of 2.04-2.19. Above average flexibility and calm setup. Used a high ¾ slot with a short arm action while showing consistent accuracy to the base.
