PBRT Alabama Select: Day 2 Scout Blog

Alabama Scouting Staff

The PBRT Alabama Select continued yesterday in Albertville, AL at the beautiful & brand-new Sand Mountain Sports Complex, which features four artificial-turf fields. Although the forecast called for some rain throughout the day, the second day of pool play games across four age divisions (14U, 15U, 16U, 17U) was only interrupted once due to lightning, but quickly was resumed thanks to the turf fields. Our scouts were on hand for all games played, and there were plenty of standout performances throughout the day, both at the plate and on the mound. Teams and players were well-represented throughout the southeast part of the country, making for a perfect day of baseball.

Before we get cranked up with Day 3 of the tournament, our scouts went back to take a look and highlight some of the top performers on Day 2...

Bryant Sparkman, RHP, Decatur Heritage (AL), 2025
Lean, projectable 6-0, 155-pound body, long-limbed with plenty of physical projection coming down the road. Delivered four perfect innings on the mound playing up for Bulls Baseball 15U, while striking out six hitters in the process. Fastball ranged consistently 81-83 mph w/ 2200 rpm’s, overpowering hitters with the pitch. Did show some feel for a tight slider at 71 mph that tunneled off the pitch when down in the zone. Long & loose arm, has already bumped up five mph’s since last summer. One to follow for the next few years.

Payton Armour, SS, Meigs County (TN), 2023
Tall, average 6-2, 165-pound frame. Uses a simple, balanced setup at the plate with efficient rhythm in the swing. Recorded three hits in the middle of the lineup for FX Baseball, and drove in two hitters in the process. Keeps the barrel through the zone using a short stroke from the right side. Drove this one below into the LCF gap for an RBI single in his third at-bat. Solid feel for the barrel, and was a key catalyst in their win today.

Desmond Marsili, OF/C, Huntsville (AL), 2023
5-11, 185-pound frame, has always had explosive, but fairly raw strength, and showed a more controlled stroke at the plate while still being able to incorporate the explosiveness. Biggest swing of the day came on a solo shot to left field, where he got full extension on a 1-0 offering, and didn’t miss. Whippy barrel through the zone and has plenty of bat speed, resulting in plenty of hard-hit baseballs. Walked in his next two at-bats, showing efficient plate discipline. Drove in three runs hitting out of the cleanup spot for Knights South 16U.

Cade Cole, OF, Huntsville (AL), 2023
Slim 6-2, 160-pounds with long levers and more strength coming in the near future. Displayed the ability to keep the weight back and lacing a base knock back up the middle in his second at-bat for Knights South 16U - Smith. Batting in the three spot for the Knights, finished the night on a 2-for-2 performance at the dish, and also came across to score a pair of runs.

Caden Clay, IF/RHP, Northside (GA), 2025
Big, physical presence at 6-1, 175-pounds. Got things done on both the bump and at the plate for the Alabama Raiders 14U. In his first at-bat and batting in the three-hole, Clay helped his own cause with a two-RBI triple that he laced past the second baseman into the right center gap. On the mound, the big right-hander ran the fastball up to 77 mph and spun the breaking ball at 65-67 mph. Talented two-way player.

Maddox Meeks, SS/C, Lincoln County (TN), 2024
Athletic, 5-9, 165-pound frame, shows a mature approach at the plate. In his first at-bat two in a two-strike count, Meeks sat back on a fastball and shoots it deep into the right center gap to extend the inning for the Knights South 15U. Meeks finished the game collecting a pair of base knocks, and coming across to score twice. Get the foot down early, before sending smooth and quick hands through the zone on a level plane to hit for line drives.
