South Alabama Select: Quick Hits

PBR Alabama Staff

BAY MINETTE, AL - The South Alabama Select was held on Sunday, September 25th at Coastal Alabama CC - South in Bay Minette, AL. This event was an open event that consisted of prospects from the 2023-2026 classes. These players went through extended pro-style workout that included batting practice using Trackman and Blast Motion, participated in defensive evaluations, ran the 60 yard-dash using Swift Performance, and much more. Pitchers were able to throw in simulated outings during gameplay and were able to get numbers and metrics off of our Trackman unit, such as pitch velocity, spin rate, horizontal & vertical movement & much more. There were some players who showed up and continued to build off of prior performances, but there were also some new names who jumped onto our radar with a strong showing on Sunday.

Kicking off our post-event coverage for this event, we take a look back at some of the top performers and standouts from Sunday. Continuing over the course of the next week or so, we will release different statistical leaderboards for the event then transition into releasing individual scouting reports for each player in attendance.

SS Gunner Justice, Macon East Academy (AL), 2024
Uncommitted. 5-foot-10, 158-pounds. Easily one of the top performers during the showcase portion posting numerous metrics near the top of most statistical categories. Athletic prospect with some length to frame and smooth actions all around. Consistently found the barrel during BP using a barrel that worked up through the zone producing a top EV at 90.4 mph. Knob leads the barrel to contact while working mostly back up the middle during his round. Showcased athleticism during infield using excellent footwork and reliable hands with accurate throws across. Also ran one of the top 60 YD's from the event at 7.08.

LHP Bryson Goff, Saraland (AL), 2023
Uncommitted. 6-foot-4, 190-pounds. After winning some big games last spring against some of the best competition the state has to offer, Goff showed quality pitch-ability using a true three-pitch arsenal in his two scoreless innings of work. Creating extension down the mound using his longer frame, the senior worked up to 87.0 mph early on his outing before settling in comfortably in the low-80's with his fastball. In addition to the heater, Goff also featured a short, tight slider in the upper-70's with late bite and a fading changeup at 75 mph that he got swings-and-misses with. Goff showed the ability to fill up the zone with all three offerings and certainly has the track record of beating quality competition over the long haul.

C Mikey Vanderheyden, Enterprise (AL), 2025
5-foot-11, 170-pounds. Currently ranked as the No. 10 prospect in the sophomore class in AL, Vanderheyden continued to impress in multiple facets and trend up offensively. With more strength being added since the last viewing, the right-handed hitting backstop worked more short-to-long in his swing while driving balls back up the middle in his BP round, resulting in a max EV at 93.3 mph. Defensively, Vanderheyden continues to maintain his status as one of the top defensive catchers in the class with the ability to stick the low pitch in the zone for strikes and deliver accurate throws to 2nd base with a more stronger arm (76 mph) now. A good one to follow in the sophomore class.

3B/RHP Charlie Jones, Oneonta (AL), 2023
Uncommitted. 6-foot-1, 178-pounds. One of the biggest winners of the day, the uncommitted senior showed some intriguing upside as a potential two-way prospect during the event. Using an athletic frame with some proportional strength throughout, Jones has a clean stroke hitting from the left side of the plate and keeps the barrel through the zone while delivering firm contact to all parts of the field during BP and in gameplay. Jones also ranked near the top of most Blast Motion categories and posted a 90.3 mph max EV, as well. The senior also recorded a hard-hit single to RF and also worked up to 83.3 mph on the mound.

C/1B Jack Malone, Bayshore Christian (AL), 2025
6-foot-0, 190-pounds. Although being one of the younger prospects attending the event, Malone put some impressive pull-side power on display both during his round of BP and in gameplay. With a physical frame with strength in the lower-half, the sophomore drove balls to the pull-side gap with authority during BP with a max EV at 98.4 mph (1st) and a max distance at 351 ft (2nd). He continued to swing the bat well throughout gameplay and closed out his day with a double that one-hopped the LCF wall for a stand-up double. Using controlled aggression hitting from the right side of the plate, Malone showed the ability to find the sweet spot consistently with a mostly level path through the zone. Another good one to follow in the sophomore class in AL.
