South Alabama Select Scout Blog: Outfielders

Today it is the outfielders turn as we take an in depth look at each outfielder present at The Prospect Lab on July 14. Several outfielders turned in impressive performances in the 60 yard dash and with the bat, while others showed nice arm strength during the defensive portion of the workout. Let's see how each outfielder fared at the event:

Brodie Barrentine: OF/LHP, (2024) Mobile Christain, AL. 5-foot-3, 118-pound. At the plate, the left-handed hitter's best exit velocity was 72 mph. Sets up in an open stance with a small leg kick. Level swing plane. He found some barrels through his round. Up the middle approach. In the outfield, his best throws to the infield topped out at 67 mph; has sure hands and a clean exchange. Showed decent accuracy to the bases. In the 60-yard dash, he clocked a time of 7.71. On the mound, threw his fastball 66-67 mph and topped out at 67 mph; shows arm side command. His curveball (54-55) has command around the zone and sweeping action. His changeup (63-64) shows early action. Will be on Team Alabama at the PBR Junior Future Games.

Paxton Cooper: OF/LHP, (2023) Baker, AL. 5-foot-7, 140-pound athletic frame. During batting practice, Cooper recorded an exit velocity of 78 mph. Starts in a balanced stance with a toe tap. Bat speed is quick, uses uphill swing plane and good extension on his finish. Pull side approach. Recorded an outfield position velocity of 81 mph; has a quick exchange, soft hands and consistent feet. Had decent accuracy. Recorded a 60 time of 7.02 at the event. On the mound, showed a quick arm action. Showed some effort in his delivery. Produced a fastball that came in at 76-77 mph with a max of 77 mph; had in the zone control and running action. Has command around the zone on his 11/5 curveball (63-64). His changeup (63-64) has consistent command and fading action. Solid day for the rising sophomore.

Connor Cosby: OF/1B, (2023) Auburn, AL. 5-foot-11, 156-pound. During batting practice, Cosby recorded an exit velocity of 82 mph. Sets up a balanced stance. Upward swing plane. He Barreled up some balls during the round. Opposite field approach. From the outfield, his best throws to the bases were registered at 71 mph; showed a natural exchange and consistent hands. Had consistent accuracy to the base with a quick arm action. Performed well in the 60-yard dash, clocking a speedy time of 6.98. Impressive numbers posted by Cosby.

Hunter Nichols: OF, (2023) Murphy, AL. 5-foot-9, 185-pound physical frame. In the box, Nichols had an exit velocity of 82 mph. Sets up in an open stance and used a big leg kick. He Barreled up some balls throughout his round. Pull side approach. From the outfield, he made throws to the infield at velocities up to 76 mph; has a clean exchange and soft hands. Showed a high ¾ slot with consistent accuracy to the bag. During the event, clocked a 60 time of 7.22. A good looking '23 grad.

Hayden Phillips: OF, (2021) Fairhope, AL. 6-foot-1, 205-pound physical frame. At the plate, Phillips showed his power ability with an exit velocity of 92 mph. Had a balanced wide stance. Had quick bat speed and had good extension on his finish. He Barreled up multiple balls throughout the round. Gap to gap approach. Recorded an outfield position velocity of 81 mph; shows a fluid exchange, quick feet and sure hands. Had decent accuracy. Showed his athleticism during the event with a sub-seven 60 time of 6.93. A very physical player that showed well at the event.

Malcolm Pugh: OF/RHP, (2023) Leroy, AL. 6-foot-4, 190-pound projectable frame. In the box, the right-handed hitter recorded an exit velocity of 87 mph. Sets up a closed stance. Had explosive bat speed and had good extension on his finish. He found multiple barrels with some loud contact. Pull side approach. Raw in the outfield, his throws to the bases were maxed out at 83 mph; showed athletic feet and raw hands. Showed occasional accuracy to the base with a quick arm action. Showed his athleticism during the event with a sub-seven 60 time of 6.68. Some raw talent but very projectable.

Jaxon Roberts: OF/RHP, (2025) Undecided, AL. 5-foot-10, 150-pound solid frame. During batting practice, Roberts clocked an exit velocity of 81 mph. Started in a balanced stance then used a toe tap. Bat speed was quick. Found multiple barrels with some loud contact. Gap to gap approach. In the outfield, his best throw of the day was clocked at 80 mph; showed average footwork. Showed some accuracy. Performed well in the 60-yard dash, clocking a speedy time of 6.97. On the mound, produced a fastball that came in at 74-76 mph with a max of 76 mph; has decent control and running action. Has a 11/5 curveball (68-69) that shows tight action and around the zone control. His changeup (65-66) showed fading action. Will be on Team Alabama at the PBR Junior Future Games.
