Prep Baseball Report

Super 60: Alabama Recap

PBR Alabama Staff

On Sunday, February 5, Prep Baseball Report hosted the 21st edition of its prestigious, flagship event: the Super 60 Pro Showcase. This invitation-only event featured the top draft prospects in Prep Baseball Report’s expansive coverage area. Over the last 20 years, the Super 60 has become the most heavily scouted preseason event for potential draft picks. The primary purpose of the Super 60 is to give professional area scouts, cross-checkers and scouting directors a head start to the high school season. Alabama had three representatives that attended the event, including OF Coleman Mizell (Hartselle HS), C Stone Lawless (Huntsville HS), and LHP Jack Smith (Hartselle HS). The event was for draft-eligible Class of 2023 prospects.

Coleman Mizell

+ OF Coleman Mizell (Hartselle, 2023) was amongst one of the top outfielders in the attendance at Sunday's event, and did everything at a high level in front of nearly 100 professional scouts. Mizell, an Alabama signee, has continued to add significant physicality to his 6-foot-3, 215-pound frame while still maintaining athleticism. He started off his day running a 6.80 60-yard dash while showing some of the best burst and quickness with the second-best 10-yard dash at 1.60. Mizell's athleticism plays up in game, using a quick first step out of the left-handed box. He carried it over into BP, where he peppered balls into both gaps from the left side with a quick barrel that produced multiple upper-90's EV readings. While most of his power comes from the opposite-field side during games, Mizell showed the ability to work the barrel out front and line balls to the pull-side, as well.

Stone Lawless

+ C Stone Lawless (Huntsville, 2023) was amongst a deep group of talented catchers at Sunday's event, but his BP and accurate throws to the second base bag during defensive workouts were what stood out. Listed at 6-foot-3, 220-pounds, the Tennessee signee turned in a solid offensive performance, especially during his second round where he worked the middle of the field with firm contact and back-spin. The right-hander has a mostly uphill, clean path through the hitting the zone and uses a strong, well-proportioned frame to generate loud contact to all fields. Although he is still working his way back to 100% from a shoulder injury, Lawless delivered accurate throws to the second base bag during defensive workouts with 2.07-2.15 pop times which have been lower when he's full-strength.

Jack Smith

+ LHP Jack Smith (Hartselle, 2023) was the last of the three Alabama representatives to showcase his abilities at Sunday's event, but certainly made a strong impression showcasing quality feel for his three-pitch mix. The Arkansas signee was one of the first few pitchers to throw during the extended bullpen session and consistently operated around the 89-90 mph, T90.5 mph range with his fastball. Smith's fastball seems to have a heavy feel to it with lower average spin rates around 1900 rpm during this viewing. Smith's breaking ball showed hard 1-7 shape working 75-76 mph and generating an average spin rate of 2260 rpm, while his changeup at 80-83 mph with slight fade was arguably his best pitch in his arsenal during the outing. The southpaw has a 6-foot-3, 215-pound frame with a strong lower-half that he uses well in his delivery, and will certainly carry more velocity as he continues to develop into his frame.
