Super 60 Spotlight: C Stone Lawless

On Sunday, February 5, Prep Baseball Report will host the 21st edition of its prestigious, flagship event: the Super 60 Pro Showcase. This invitation-only event features only the top draft prospects in the Prep Baseball Report’s expansive coverage area. Over the last 20 years, the Super 60 has become the most heavily scouted preseason event for potential draft picks. The primary purpose of the Super 60 is to give professional area scouts, cross-checkers and scouting directors a head start to the high school season. The event is for draft-eligible Class of 2023 prospects.

Alabama will have three players attending Sunday's event in Chicago, and today, we take a look at C Stone Lawless (Huntsville HS), the state's top-ranked backstop in the senior class and Tennessee signee.

 

Lawless' Path to the 2023 PBR Super 60

Even at such a young age, it was easy to see what made Lawless one of the top prospects in the 2023 class in AL. A Tennessee signee, Stone never fell outside the Top-3 in our 2023 Rankings since the first edition back in November of 2019, and currently sits at No. 2 as he heads to the Super 60 this weekend in Chicago, IL looking to impress the tons of professional scouts that will be in attendance. 

The right-handed backstop first jumped onto our radar at the Preseason All-State event back in January of 2019. While being one of the younger prospects in attendance at a quality event with some of the state's best prospects, Lawless caught the attention of those in attendance with just how different the ball came off of his barrel from the the right side at such a young age. From that attendance alone, Lawless established himself as a must-follow and a name-to-know moving forward in his graduating class.

C Stone Lawless (1/28/19)

Lawless continued to have a strong year in 2019 playing in the summer and fall circuit with Knights Baseball and Goats Baseball. The backstop continued to show big gap-to-gap power in the right-hander's box, and was only going to continue to add more once he got stronger and filled out his frame. Playing in the PBR Fall Championships in Hoover in September of 2019, Lawless is shown below providing a glimpse of what was to come in the future on this triple down the left field line playing for Goats Baseball. He would conclude his fall of 2019 by committing to the University of Tennessee, where he would end up signing to this past November.

C Stone Lawless (9/21/19)

The right-hander returned back to the Preseason All-State in 2020 fresh off of his commitment, and continued to cement himself as one of the top prospects in the 2023 class in AL. He showed off a powerful swing from the right side driving balls to both gaps with consistency during his round of BP, but there was still much more power to come once he added mass and continued to fill out his frame. Still, there was no doubting that it would eventually come down the road and was still a very impressive prospect at the time.

C Stone Lawless (1/20/20)

For the rest of the year of 2020, Stone continued to make strides to his game and in terms of physicality and only benefitted him as he did. Moving into his sophomore season was when he really seemed to tap into his potential. His offensive ability continued to come on, but his arm had gotten much stronger over the past year and showed the ability to shut down opposing runner games on any given night. In our first viewing of him in the spring of 2021, it didn't take long for him to make his impact on the game as a sophomore playing in the largest classification in the state. Shown in the video below, Stone delivered a strike to second base from his knees to nab a would-be base-stealer while showing off his premium arm strength and quick transfer from behind the plate. He also added in a pull-side double later in the game, offensively.

C Stone Lawless (3/10/21)

Later in the same year, the Tennessee signee shined in one of the biggest tournaments of the year at LakePoint Sports playing in the National Program Invitational with Knights Baseball. At that time, it was easy to see the strides that Lawless had made physically to his frame. He certainly looked the part of a future middle-of-the-order hitter at the next level. He's shown below lining a ball down the left field for a well-struck single in one of his at-bat's during that event.

C Stone Lawless (6/12/21)

During his junior high school season playing for Huntsville, Lawless was only featured in a designated-hitter role after suffering an injury. He still found a way to make his impact at the plate for the Panthers, including this no-doubter over the left field fence playing in the AL/TN Showdown in the middle of March. Lawless would continue to have a strong junior year as an extra-base hit threat in the heart of the order.

C Stone Lawless (3/18/22)

After accepting his invite to the PBR Super 60 back in late 2022, Lawless attended January's Huntsville Preseason ID where he provided a glimpse of what is to come this weekend in Chicago, IL. Now standing 6-foot-3, 220-pounds, the backstop has a well-proportioned frame with a catcher-type build and a professional approach from the right side of the plate. In addition to his efforts on the diamond, Stone has an excellent makeup while carrying a quiet confidence about himself. Look for Stone to have a strong showing and represent the state of Alabama well at this weekend's PBR Super 60.
