Super 60 Spotlight: OF Coleman Mizell

PBR Alabama Staff

On Sunday, February 5, Prep Baseball Report will host the 21st edition of its prestigious, flagship event: the Super 60 Pro Showcase. This invitation-only event features only the top draft prospects in the Prep Baseball Report’s expansive coverage area. Over the last 20 years, the Super 60 has become the most heavily scouted preseason event for potential draft picks. The primary purpose of the Super 60 is to give professional area scouts, cross-checkers and scouting directors a head start to the high school season. The event is for draft-eligible Class of 2023 prospects.

Alabama will have three players attending Sunday's event in Chicago, and today, we take a look at OF Coleman Mizell (Hartselle HS), the state's No. 1-ranked prospect and Alabama signee.

Mizell's Path to the 2023 PBR Super 60

The left-handed hitting outfielder really established himself as a top prospect in his graduating class in AL in the early going, especially with his strong showing with Team Alabama at the PBR Future Games in 2020. Mizell, an Alabama signee, has a dynamic combination of elite speed and strength that allows him to impact a baseball game in a variety of ways. He currently comes into the Super 60 as the No. 1-ranked prospect in the 2023 class in AL, and will look to potentially boost his MLB Draft stock with a good showing at this Sunday's event in Chicago, IL.

Attending the PBR Super 60, Mizell will now have participated in the two largest national events that Prep Baseball Report has to offer after kick-starting his recruitment at the PBR Future Games with Team Alabama in 2020. Although the event that summer was a bit different due to COVID-19 restrictions and guidelines, Mizell still was one of the more sought-after recruits in attendance. Still in his sophomore season at the time with plenty of growth and development to come in the next few years, the left-handed hitting outfielder was a top performer in the workout and carried it over to a few hits during gameplay. Entering the PBR Future Games that year, Mizell was ranked at No. 12 in the 2023 class in AL but jumped up to No. 6 shortly after the event. A couple months later, Coleman would go on to pledge his commitment to the University of Alabama, where he would end up signing back in November of last year.

It wouldn't take long for Mizell to make his way into Hartselle's lineup as a sophomore, where he established himself as a premium run-producer for the years to come. Although at such a young age playing one of the more talented teams in the state, the Alabama recruit was a key piece to the Tigers' Class 6A runner-up finish back in 2021. In multiple viewings during that year, the left-hander was an extra-base hit machine while driving in runs consistently in the middle of the order.

After that spring, Mizell attended the All-State Games, an invite-only event for the top prospects in the state, where he continued to raise his status as one of the prospects not only in the state, but in the country. Standing 6-foot-3, 215-pounds then, the outfielder displayed elite tools during that event running a 6.8 60-yard dash and driving balls to both gaps during BP with a top exit velocity at 100 mph.

Continuing his strong summer, Coleman made a quick impression on the PBR scouts over at LakePoint Sports in Emerson, GA. Playing in the PBR 16U National Championship, enjoyed a strong tournament where he's shown driving a ground-rule double to the back-side gap during one of his at-bat's during the tournament. His dynamic combination of speed, strength, and athleticism was easy to see why it made him one of the top prospects in AL.

Entering the spring of 2022, Mizell would eventually take over as the No. 1-ranked prospect in the state of AL in the 2023 class ahead of his junior season. After a tough ending to his sophomore season finishing as the runner-up in Class 6A, Hartselle looked poised to make it back to the finals and avenge their loss from last year. The Tigers, who ranked No. 1 from start to finish, would end up going 39-4 in 2022 and swept through all of their playoff series en route to a Class 6A State Title. Mizell easily had his best season yet at the high school level, where he hit a jaw-dropping .504/.586/.854 to go along with 10 HR's, 18 2B's, 56 RBI's, 25 BB's and just 19 K's on the season.

Over the course of the year, Mizell continued to get stronger and now stands 6-foot-3, 220-pounds while still maintaining that elite athleticism. It's not difficult to see what makes him such an elite prospect, and he'll be looking to raise his MLB Draft stock with a strong showing this Sunday at the 2023 PBR Super 60 in Chicago, IL.
