Underclass Games Scout Blog: Catchers

The Underclass Games were held on June 23 at beautiful Choccolocco Park and after morning rains, the weather was perfect for the event. The level of play at the event for the underclassmen was superb with several players having an impressive day at the event, including several catchers. Today we take a look at the seven catchers present at the event, and will continue in the next few days by taking an in depth look at the players at their respective positions. Here are the catchers:

Brooks Bryan: C/3B, (2022) Opelika, AL. 6-foot-1, 200-pound physical frame. During the event, ran the 60-yard dash in 7.61. Started in a tall stance with a smooth load, then used a short stride just before his swing. Bat speed is explosive, has upward swing plane and high finish. He found multiple barrels with loud contact. the left-handed hitter displayed an exit velocity of 94 mph, showing his strength and power ability. While in the infield, made throws at velocities up to 82 mph; has a clean exchange, sure hands and consistent feet. He produced a position velocity of 74 mph during throw downs; has quick footwork and a natural exchange. Some flexibility and athletic setup.While catching, he had a pop time of 2.01-2.09. Showed consistent accuracy to the bag with a short arm action and an-over-the-top slot. 

Trent Wright: C/3B, (2023) Mountain Brook, AL. 5-foot-10, 197-pound mature frame. During the event, ran the 60-yard dash in 7.28. Started in an open stance with a controlled load, then used a leg kick before his swing. Bat speed is quick, exhibits upward swing plane and high finish. He found multiple barrels with a lot of loud contact. Gap to gap approach. the right-handed hitters best exit velocity was 83 mph. His best recorded throw to second was clocked at 71 mph; had a natural exchange and consistent footwork. Some flexibility and clean setup.While catching, recorded pop times of 2.10-2.28. Consistent accuracy to the bag, used a quick arm action and an-over-the-top slot. 

John (Jabe) Boroff: SS/C, (2023) Macon East, AL. 5-foot-10, 170-pound athletic frame. In the 60-yard dash, he clocked a time of 7.73. Began in a balanced stance with a quick load, then used a leg kick. Has short swing plane, above average bat speed and good extension on his finish. He created some loud contact and found some barrels. Gap to gap approach. the right-handed hitter clocked an exit velocity of 87 mph. While in the infield, made throws up to 71 mph; has a clean exchange, smooth feet and soft hands. His best recorded velocity during throw downs was clocked at 65 mph; showed a clean exchange and rhythmic footwork. Average flexibility and staggered setup.Behind the plate, had consistent pop times of 2.10-2.33. Used a high ¾ slot and a short arm action while showing consistent accuracy to the bag. 

Tanner Potts: C/RHP, (2023) Holtville, AL. 5-foot-9, 190-pound sturdy frame. During the event, recorded a 60 time of 8.61. Begins in an open stance with a quick load, then uses a small leg kick just before his swing. Has above average bat speed, upward swing plane and high finish. Found multiple barrels with a lot of loud contact. the right-handed hitter's best exit velocity was 84 mph. Throw downs to second topped out at 66 mph; showed a fluid exchange and rhythmic footwork. Had clean setup. Behind the plate, produced pop times of 2.12-2.22. Consistent accuracy to the bag, used a quick arm action and an-over-the-top slot. 

John Downs: C/1B, (2023) Bibb County, AL. 5-foot-11, 145-pound slim frame. Recorded a 60 time of 7.72 at the event. Starts in an open stance with a quick load, then uses a leg kick just before his swing. Had flat swing plane and good extension on his finish. Barreled up some balls throughout his round. Up the middle approach. the switch hitter's best exit velocity was 76 mph. His best recorded velocity during throw downs was clocked at 69 mph; has athletic footwork and a quick exchange. Athletic setup with tons of flexibility. While catching, he had a pop time of 2.20-2.23. Showed consistent accuracy to the base with a high ¾ slot and a short arm action. 

Tyde Harrison: RHP/C, (2024) Calera, AL. 6-foot-2, 170-pound projectable frame. Started in a balanced stance with a controlled load, then used a leg kick before his swing. Had upward short swing plane and had good extension on his finish. the right-handed hitter recorded an exit velocity of 82 mph. Throw downs to second topped out at 65 mph; shows developing footwork and a clean exchange. Quiet setup with some flexibility. Behind the plate, produced pop times of 2.36-2.49. Had a loose arm action and a high ¾ slot with consistent accuracy to the bag. On the mound, showed a ¾ arm angle and a consistent arm action. Produced a fastball that came in at 72-73 mph with a max of 74 mph; showed consistent command and sinking action.

Bentley Goodwin: C/OF, (2023) Westminster Christian, AL. 5-foot-8, 160-pound proportional frame. In the 60-yard dash, his time was 7.7. Started in an open stance with a controlled load, then used a leg kick before his swing. Has level swing plane and level finish. Found some barrels with loud contacts. Pull side approach. Goodwin's 89 mph exit velocity showed his ability to drive the ball with power. He recorded a position velocity of 64 mph during throw downs; shows consistent footwork and a fluid exchange. Has narrow setup. While catching, he produced a pop time of 2.39-2.44. Decent accuracy to the bases, used a high ¾ slot and a quick arm action.
