2017 Prospect Review: #17 Tyler Johnson

Zac Bottoms
Arkansas Scouting Director

As the calendar turns to December, I want to review the top prospects from the 2017. These players have separated themselves as top prospect, with the potential at some point in their career to become professional prospects, if they are not already.

Scouting Report

Johnson is a 6-foot-2 200-pound 1st basemen/ outfielder, with a large frame and an athletic build. He attacks the baseball with fast bat speed and an advanced feel for the barrel. He starts from a tall stance, he uses a simple load stride combination, he uses a slight uphill swing which flashes pull power. He uses his lower half partially. Defensively he plays through the baseball with fluid footwork. He uses a short arm action and throws the baseball with accuracy. Overall Johnson is an advanced left-handed hitter with above average athleticism.

UNDERCLASS GAMES TYLER JOHNSON

Johnson erupted on to the scene for me on during the Underclass Games of 2016. He showed advanced physical strength and bat speed. He showed above average athleticism, as an outfielder- first base combination. He followed that strong outing with a solid summer for Perfect Timing, most notably a monster performance at the Chad Wolfe Classic, where he was a force to be reckoned with, with loud contact on nearly every at bat.

Shortly after both events he received and committed to Arkansas. He has continued show as an advanced offensive player for Bentonville High School and Perfect Timing. He should make it campus but will be a player to watch as a left-handed power bat in the college ranks.
