Signing Classes Recap: Arkansas State University

Zac Bottoms
Arkansas Scouting Director

We are reviewing signing classes from all in-state colleges, and highlighting players who committed to play college baseball outside the Natural State.

We have worked through the University of Arkansas and Power 5 signees, check out those stories below.

Today we move onto Arkansas State University. The Red wolves landed 5 high school players, with one from Arkansas. They also signed 2016 Bryant High School graduate Zach Jackson out of Crowder College.

Scouting Report

Top Prospects Games

Richardson is a 6-foot-3 190-pound right-hander with a large frame and an athletic build. He showed well during BP; he starts with a tall stance; using a simple load stride combination; he attacks the baseball with aggression and fast bat speed. He has the ability to hit for power to the pull side. In game he showed that he is a true two way player. He pitched 83-86 mph from a low ¾ arm slot with late sink. His ability to command two secondary pitches, make him very intriguing on the mound. His slider worked 72-75 mph with late action. His changeup was 69-71 mph with late sink. Overall Richardson is a solid two way player, with an advanced feel to hit.

Will Richardson is a 6-foot-2, 170-pound RHP. He works from a Low 3/4 arm slot with a quick clean arm and he gets good extension. He locates his fastball on both sides of the plate at 82-84 mph with late sink and touched 86 mph. His changeup is a polished pitch thrown 71-73 mph with arm side run. He also locates Frisbee breaking ball consistently 72-75 mph. He repeats his mechanics consistently with balance and rhythm. Richardson has a projectable frame and an advanced feel to pitch.

5/23/17 Pitching

Richardson is a large player that has shown the aptitude to perform at the next level as both a pitcher and a hitter. From talking with the staff at Arkansas State, look for him to compete at both until the game decides which he is better at.

Scouting Report

6.2.15 Top Prospects Game

Jackson is a 6-foot-2 230-pound right hander with a large frame and a large build. He primarily pitches with a two pitch combination of his fastball and slider. The fastball is 85-88 mph with boring action. His slider is thrown at 74-77 mph with late sharp break, which dominated hitters this spring. Jackson works from a H3/4 arm slot, with a quick arm. He repeats his mechanics. He needs to improve the body and continue to recover from Tommy John he had just 7 months ago. Overall he is one of the top arms in the 2016 class and should continue to get better as the body and athleticism improve.

These notes were for Jackson from our Top Prospects Games, in the summer prior to his senior year. He had a dominant senior year helping Bryant win a state championship. He chose to attend Crowder College, after committing to Arkansas. He had a solid year for the Roughriders, as they made a run to Junior College World Series. He should be a big time get for Coach Raffo and staff as he commands the strike zone with two advanced pitches, a fastball with heavy sink and a sharp slider.
