AZ Player of the Week: Tanner Smith

Welcome to our Arizona Player of the Week

Each week our PBR Arizona staff will choose a player of the week from our coverage throughout the previous week's AIA Coverage This player will be chosen based on their performance or for particular reasons that set them apart from other players from around the state of Arizona. We will try to post our player of the week every Monday throughout the spring high school season. 

Player of the week (Week 1)

2021 C Tanner Smith- Basha HS

2021 catcher, Tanner Smith of Basha High School in Chandler, AZ has been named your PBR Arizona Player off the Week for February 26 - March 1st, 2020. Smith is committed to play baseball in college at Oregon State University who won the DI National Championship in 2018.

Many of the high school programs around the state kick-off their spring with local tournaments in Arizona. Basha High School competed in the Desert Vista Baseball Tournament this past week, which is filled with some of the top teams in the state. The Basha Bears have started their season on a positive note against good teams, going undefeated in 4 games with a 3-0-1 record in the process. Part of the reason for their success is their offense, led by Bitner Workman, Ryland Zaborowski and Tanner Smith. 

Tanner Smith is swinging one of the hottest bats in the state to start the 2020 season. In four games, Smith went 9 for 15 with 4 HR's, 6 runs, & 11 runs batted in while touching 21 bases. Smith has always been known for his bat with natural pop. However, his defense often goes under the radar. He stands out behind the plate with some flexibility for a strong kid. He was recently clocked at 1.85-2.06 pop times at our Fall Review back in December. His bat and defensive skills landed him at Oregon State. 

For his great start to the spring season we congratulate Tanner Smith of Basha HS as our PBR Arizona Player of the Week.
