Commitment Spotlight: Marcus Delgado

Brett Thorney
State Scouting Director

Today, We had the pleasure of catching up with 2022 RHP Marcus Delgado of Canyon Del Oro High School to ask him a few questions about his recruiting experience. Delgado made a commitment back at the end of August to the New Mexico State University to further his baseball career. Delgado's upside on the mound gave him the opportunity to be a back to back member of Team Arizona at the PBR Future Games. Although, it was a bit different of an experience this year with the dead period, Delgado still stood out on the mound. He ran his fastball up to 89.47mph which is his personal high at any PBR event he has attended. For his continued progression on the mound, PBR Arizona ranked him as the No. 8 right-hander in the state in the recent update. Delgado should continue to be an arm to follow in the 2022 class.

Scouting Report

6/24/20

6-foot-2 180-pounds, lean body with long limbs, high waisted, has gained some strength in the last year. Competed as a two-way at the 22TPG. Right-handed hitter with raw approach. Hits from a squared upright stance, uses a stiff leg kick turning his knee inward before landing slightly hard on front foot. Showed above average bat & hand speed with good rotation. Turns barrel early at times, creating a pull approach. Natural arm strength, showing some aggressiveness in the OF, throwing 89mph. Capable footwork with confident actions. Ran a 7.58 60-yard dash. Also worked out on the mound where he should end up at the next level. Rhythm to repeatable delivery, coiling over rubber. Lands slightly closed. Throws with quick short arm action from a H ¾ slot. Pounded the strike with his straight FB at 83-87mph. Showed varying movement on slurvy breaking ball at 69-71mph. CH is his best secondary pitch at 73-75mph that moves similar to a cutter at times. Should be followed.

PBR: Why did you choose the school you did?
Delgado: I really like the pitching coach and I like his philosophy on pitching and they really wanted me so that really good.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?
Delgado: I was talking to GCU, Xavier and some other schools but nothing as serious.

PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you? How did your relationship develop with him?
Delgado: They saw me through video mainly and the countless phone calls I had with the pitching coach helped develop a good relationship.

PBR: Do you feel relieved now that the process is over and you can just focus on baseball and not deal with everything that goes into picking a school?
Delgado: Yes I feel very relieved but there is a new
pressure in trying to get seen by Pro scouts.
PBR: Was there one deciding factor that put your choice over the top?
Delgado: The amount of the offer and I really liked the pitching coach and the environment of the school.

PBR: Who has helped you the most to get to where you are today?
Delgado: My club baseball coach George Arias, no doubt.

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it easy/difficult?
Delgado: My expectations of the process was that it would be more stressful but it was not that stressful to me and it was easy for me to pick a school.

PBR: What plans does the coaching staff have in store for you in your freshman season?
Delgado: The pitching coach said I could possibly be a weekend starter.

PBR: What is your most memorable baseball moment to date?
Delgado: Going to Georgia for the PBR Future Games and seeing all the scouts. It was crazy.

PBR: Who is the best player that you have competed against?
Delgado: I dont really know but I did play against Carl Crawfords son which was cool.
