Commitment Spotlight: Masen Schechterle

Brett Thorney
State Scouting Director

Today, We had the pleasure of catching up with 2021 3B Masen Schechterle of Brophy College Prep. Schechterle recently made his commitment to Queens University of Charlotte in the South Atlantic Conference. Schechterle is a prospect that has made significant improvements since the beginning of the year to put himself on the radar of college coaches. Most recently he attended our Arizona Summer Review where he saw increases across the board including a 95.26mph peak exit velocity & showing consistent pop in the 90mph range. His arm also was noticeably stronger with some more carry across the diamond. Look for Schechertle to have a big year for Brophy College Prep this upcoming year.

Scouting Report

1/26/20

6-foot-1 170-pounds, lean body with broad shoulders, long legs, some strength & athleticism. Has gotten a bit bigger since we last saw him in December. Starts from a squared base with balance. Uses gathered leg lift, riding back leg into heel plant. Long level swing, creating an arm bar at times. Middle approach with above average contact at 91mph. Had trouble getting into his legs on the low pitches. Easy controlled footwork in the infield with sure hands. Gets around the baseball. Forces hand glove separation before throwing, 82 mph arm strength across the diamond with more in the tank. All-around solid player.

PBR: Why did you choose the school you did?
Player: I have always wanted to live somewhere in the Carolinas, and Queens felt like the perfect fit for me being in North Carolina. The coaching staff is very supportive, and I feel it is where I can be most successful on and off the field.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?
Player: At the beginning of the recruiting process, I knew that I wanted to go out of state. I was considering some schools in the Northwest, but once I stepped foot on the campus, I knew I wanted to be a student-athlete at Queens.

PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you? How did your relationship develop with him?
Player: I traveled to Charlotte to meet the coaches, and I did a camp in August where they saw me play. The coaching staff was very easy to talk to, and we were able to develop a good relationship quickly.

PBR: Do you feel relieved now that the process is over and you can just focus on baseball and not deal with everything that goes into picking a school?
Player:  Yes it is a relief. It is great knowing where I am going to college so now I can focus on Senior year and my last high school baseball season.

PBR: Was there one deciding factor that put your choice over the top?
Player: The campus being three miles from downtown Charlotte was a huge factor because it is a great city and in a great area of Charlotte.

PBR: Who has helped you the most to get to where you are today?
Player: Coach Josh Garcia and his Brophy coaching staff have helped tremendously. My parents have pushed me and supported me to achieve my dream. Joe Dominiak has helped a lot too.

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it easy/difficult?
Player:  It was definitely harder than I expected. It is a balance of finding a school that you like, while the school also has to like you.

PBR: What plans does the coaching staff have in store for you in your freshman season?
Player: I am not sure what exactly the coaching staff has planned for me, but my goal is to work hard and fight for a starting spot as a freshman and make a big impact for Queens.

PBR: What is your most memorable baseball moment to date?
Player: It is the moment I committed to Queens because I have worked towards being a college baseball player my whole life.

PBR: Who is the best player that you have competed against?
Player: Chase Valentine
