Fall Underclass Showcase: Position Player Scouting Reports

Paul Panaccione
Arizona Scouting Director

On Oct. 3, 2021 Prep Baseball Report Arizona hosted the Fall Underclass Showcase at Grand Canyon University. The Fall Underclass Showcase is an annual open showcase accessible to the high school players in the Phoenix area, granting players the opportunity to be evaluated by the PBR Arizona staff while their tools were analyzed by state-of-the-art technologies on-site.

With some talented players in attendance, there were some standout performances. Along with the standout performances, there were some standout bodies and actions with much project-ability. One of those players with some upside was 3B/RHP Gavin Short (Sunnyslope, 2024), showing well as both a hitter and a pitcher with a strong frame. #16 ranked SS Shane Miller (Higley, 2024) showed his smooth movements as a shortstop and in the left handed batters box. And 1B Andrew Johnson (Gilbert, 2024) increased his stock while putting up some big numbers in batting practice and showing his advanced approach at the plate.

Today we finalize the event by looking into each position player's full analysis.

Hit: RHH. Base just outside shoulder width with a bend in the knees. Hands held shoulder height with bat laying flat above the shoulder. Some weight on the back side.  Uses a small toe tap for load, small amount of separation with hands and then weight moves forwards. Hands stay tight to the body during swing. Handles the ball middle/away best, struggles to get to ball in. Ability to hit the ball in would improve if he eliminated small glide with stride. Swing stays on plane, 81% on plane efficiency on Blast.
Power: 85.25 max exit velocity, averaged 69.64 mph. 223’ max distance. Best ball is to middle/right center.
Arm: INF - 70 mph.  Consistent with transfer and release, throws from a high 3/4 slot.

Power: 82.17 max exit velocity, averaged 71.33 mph. 290’ max distance. 42% line drive contact, in consistent with contact point, causing some roll over ground balls to pull side and weak air to right field. Best when he stays balanced and catches the ball out front.
Arm: INF - 63 mph.  Throws from a lower arm slot across the body. Ball has 2 seam flight across diamond.
Defense: Feet get stationary at times, letting the ball play him. Would benefit from more active feet. Range is limited.

Arm:  INF - 76 mph.  Throws from a 3/4 slot with a quick release. Throws were accurate and in a position where the infielder on the receiving end could make a play.
Defense: Understands body positioning and footwork around the bag at first. Ability to pick the tough throw and timing with stretch is right. Footwork keeps him in motion while fielding ground balls. Glove work is good.
Run: 7.76 runner in the 60. Short strides, consistent timing with strides and arm swing.

Connor Crossland, Mountain Pointe (AZ), 2024
Positional Profile: 3B/1B Strong and physically mature, profiles as a power hitting corner infielder with some swing and miss. Will be following offensive progression.

Body: 5-foot-10, 150-pounds. Athletic build, room for physical maturity.
Hit: RHH. Slightly open stance, base just outside of shoulder width. Hands held tight to the body just above back shoulder.  Uses a toe tap with load. Best contact is when weight stays balanced, he catches the ball deep, and drives to middle/right center. When ball is hit to middle, he creates much more extension through the ball. When out front he tends to lose the barrel or become rotational around the ball.
Power: 89.42 max exit velocity, averaged 80.93 mph. 336’ max distance. Bat/body control and consistency with the barrel will be key to his success. When he's in the right spot with body, the ball is struck well.

Body: 6-foot-2, 215-pounds. Large build with strength.
Hit: RHH. Narrow setup, open in stance. Hands held about shoulder height tight to body. Has some rhyme with the bat.  Medium sized knee to knee leg kick, gains some ground towards the pitcher. Hands stay tight and swing is direct and flat. Extension is limited, will impact the ball better with more true flight to pull side with added extension through the zone.
Power: 87.89 max exit velocity, averaged 78.37 mph. 320’ max distance. Has the ability to drive the gaps with size and leverage.
Arm: INF - 77 mph.  Throws from a high 3/4 slot, short arm action.

Positional Profile: C/RHP
Body: 5-foot-11, 178-pounds.
Hit: RHH. Slightly open in stance, base is outside of shoulder width. Hands are pushed forward a bit held above the ear.  Loads onto his back side, keeping weight balanced. Power: 86.27 max exit velocity, averaged 75.76 mph. 316’ max distance. High % of fly balls, with how he projects, more line drive contact at this point would put him in a better spot for success.

Defense: Hands are soft, good with the glove. Body stays in motion towards first base. Simple and consistent fielding actions.

Hit: RHH. Relaxed setup with upright/open stance and hands held lower off of right chest. Slight athletic bend in the knees with base about shoulder width.  Short stride that brings position back square to pitcher. Majority weight on the back side, would benefit from more of a weight transfer to the front side, allowing more extension through the ball. Bat path is short and direct, comes around the ball at times when catching ball out front due to body positioning. When he lets the ball get deep it is driven well to the middle part of the field with back spin flight.
Power: 87.27 max exit velocity, averaged 76.67 mph. 325’ max distance. Hardest/cleanest contact was to the middle/gaps. When he lets the ball travel this is when he's in the best position to hit and the ball comes off the bat well.
Arm: INF - 84 mph.  Recorded an event high for INF velo. Throws from a high 3/4 slot. Ability throw from lower slots on the move. Ball has 4 seam flight across diamond.
Defense: Split step is on time with contact, takes a direct path to the ball. Keeps ball off his left eye staying in motion to 1B. Glove work is average, projects as a corner infielder.
Run: 7.59 runner in the 60. Consistent with strides

Arm:  OF - 72 mph. Throws from a 3/4 slot, ball has some 2 seam action. Throws were low through cut and on target.

Thomas Peck, Basha (AZ), 2024
Positional Profile: 3B/RHP Will be following development. Added strength will clean up some mechanical issues.
Body: 5-foot-9, 155-pounds. High waist, good frame.
Hit: RHH. Stands taller, base just outside of shoulder width. Hands are held above the ear and bat held flat.  Uses a medium sized leg kick, loads onto back leg/back hip. Loses the barrel at contact causing too much air. More top hand involvement would lead to more success. Setup and mechanics are good, just needs to flatten out at contact to create more line drive contact.
Power: 86.44 max exit velocity, averaged 69.52 mph. 288’ max distance. When the swing stays tight and flat the ball comes off the bat well. When he loses the barrel you see weak offside fly balls.

Defense: Approaches the ball with confidence in the outfield. Throws were low and through the cut and on target. Arm works best from the outfield. Feet are active in the infield, glove work is consistent when he's in the right spot.
