The Arizona High School baseball season officially started this past Monday and we are excited to get out to continue our coverage this spring. On Sunday, February 9th, PBR Arizona wrapped up their preseason schedule in Mesa, Arizona with our Preseason Identification that will be the last HS aged event until the Arizona High School season concludes. We began our post-event analysis earlier this week with our Statistical Analysis, taking a look at the top statistical performers in each category. This identification event gave us some good knowledge into some players that we haven't seen before. We also got a chance to see a couple of players we haven't seen in a couple months. 

Today, we continue our analysis with an early look at some of the initial takeaways from the Preseason ID in Part One of our Quick Hits.

QUICK HITS (Part one)

UNCOMMITTED JUNIORS

+ 2021 RHP Nick Suspenzi (Desert Mountain, AZ)- 5-foot-11 170-pounds, average build with some athleticism & projectability. One of the better arms of the day. Throws from L3/4 slot with loose arm action and quick arm speed. Some effort & rhythm to go along with balanced delivery. FB sat in the mid 80’s, topping at 87mph with late cutting action. Above average CH thrown at 75-80mph with some cut & sink, near FB arm speed. SL was average with 10/4 shape, getting around the baseball at 68-71mph. Should continue to be followed on the hill. Ball jumps out of his hand.

+ 2021 OF Jake Terry (Valley Christian, AZ)- 5-foot-11 163-pounds, lean body, athleticism stood out. Plenty of room to add strength and size. Ran an event high 6.79 60-yard dash. Some fast twitch in his movements. Arguably had one of the best showings of the day across the board. Good round of BP with a mid pull approach, hitting a ball over the LF fence. Consistent solid contact with 89mph exit velocity. Had the top OF arm at 83mph with good actions and athleticism. Should be a solid follow in the OF.

+ 2021 SS/C/P Marshall Williams (Sunnyslope, AZ)- 5-foot-9 170-pounds, some strength & durability to build off, showed some athleticism running a 7.28 60-yard dash. Hard for a player to be more versatile than Williams. Switch Hitter, that worked out at SS/C/P, ambidextrous on the mound. Mid/pull approach from LH side with natural loft. LD pull approach from RH side. Solid pop from both sides of the plate. Showed consistent arm up the middle & behind the plate, turning in consistent pop times around 2.0. On the mound, his RH side is more natural. LH side is softer but smooth. FB worked 76-78mph from RH with a decent knuckleball.

+ 2021 LHP/1B Steven Vasquez (Odyssey Prep. AZ)- 6-foot-4 200-pounds, two-way player, long limbs with strength in legs, body really stood out. Threw strikes down in the zone from a H3/4 arm slot with a quick arm. Straight FB sat 80-83mph with occasional late run. CV showed above average potential at 62-66mph with 1/7 shape. Hit from a closed off stance, cutting himself off at times. Natural pop at 93mph with a middle approach. Showed some ability to lift baseball. His body & overall potential should make for a good follow over course of the spring & summer.

SOPHOMORE FOLLOWS

+ 2022 OF/RHP Lucas Cardy (Canyon Del Oro, AZ)- 6-foot-2 175-pound, proportional strength to frame, showed sneaky raw athleticism running a 6.99 60-yard dash. Another player who had a solid day across the board, showing some toolsy skills. Loud contact & above average pop to LF at 86mph with minimal separation. Hit a HR to LF in BP session. One the mound, throws from a H3/4 slot with slightly quick arm speed. Cardy sat 83-85mph with his FB that showed some late run at times. Erratic CV showed glimpses of being a plus pitch with more command, varying shape with late sharp break in bullpen. Two-way player that should be monitored closely.

+ 2022 3B Christian Perez (Sunnyslope, AZ)- 6-foot-1 215-pounds, strength & durability in frame to work with, moves well for size. Arm and continued athleticism development will determine if he stays at 3B or moves to the other side. Also came to our Preseason All-State Games a couple weeks back. His round of BP was much smoother this time out with a cleaner load. Better in game player. Left handed hitter with middle/pull approach from leg kick trigger. Power bat with loud contact at 91mph. Good glove and accurate arm. Should be followed as a left handed bat with power potential. Like what he does with the bat.

+ 2022 RHP Camden Dixon (Paradise Honors, AZ)- 6-foot 166-pound frame, thin wiry frame with athleticism, lots of room to gain strength. Last pitcher in the rotation but had some of the best stuff of the day on the mound. Threw from a ¾ slot with loose arm action. Quick to the plate with some effort. Pounded the zone with 3 pitches. FB sat 81-83mph with some late sinking action. Secondary pitches showed above average. Tight SL was thrown at 66-68 mph with sharp 10/4 shape. CH showed some cut/sinking action, thrown at 73-74mph. Overall stuff & projectability should make him a follow going into the season.
