Tucson ID: Quick Hits

Over the last couple months, PBR Arizona has had a chance to hold several events where we have seen quality talent across all grad classes. We have collected measurable statistics and valuable data metrics from many committed & uncommitted players throughout the state of Arizona. Our scouting staff also spent many hours covering outside game & tournament action. Yesterday, we had a chance to begin our fall coverage with our Tucson ID. This event was an open event available to all 2021-2024 grad players. The event was located at Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Arizona. This is a great identification event for players in Southern Arizona trying to get their names out there. The area always seems to hold untapped talent that can sometimes go under the radar. We were able to see many new faces in that area that one should keep an eye on going forward.

This event featured over 50 prospects from the 2021-2024 grad classes from all around southern Arizona. We also had players in attendance from the Phoenix area and California. This event has become a popular event in Tucson as summer seasons wrap up going into fall baseball. 

We began our post event coverage yesterday by taking a look at the top five performers at each statistical category in our Statistical Analysis. Today, we will be highlight our first impressions from the event in our Quick Hits segment. Be sure to stay tuned over the next few weeks for more post-event coverage. 

QUICK HITS

+ 2022 RHP Roman Bracamonte (Nogales)- We have had the chance to see Bracamonte at events a couple of different times now. Previously, he showed as young immature right-hander that hadn't begun to develop physically yet. Today, he has started to mature a bit more. Although, he does still show projectability in his long levered 6-foot-1 160-pound frame. The physical development is part of reason why he has made some big strides in the last 8 months. He also looks a bit more fluid with his actions. Bracamonte showed us an athletic repeatable delivery with easy effort. Throwing from a H 3/4 arm slot with short loose arm action. His FB sat 80-82mph, Topping at 85mph on his last pitch. His CH shows to be an above average pitch for him at 69-71mph. 

+ 2021 1B/OF Jack Rogers (Salpointe Catholic)- We were in a bit of shock after Rogers round of BP, as he is still uncommitted & not having seen him previously. This was hist first ever showcase. Rogers put on one of the better power displays in his round of BP that we have seen in the last couple months. He showed above average body control with easy effort. He builds up energy well before accelerating on plane quickly with his advanced bat speed. He hit a couple balls over 100mph including a ball at 104mph at 390ft in his round of BP. As good as Rogers looked at the plate, he showed above average athleticism in 6-foot-3 210-pound frame, running a 6.96 60-yard dash. First base is listed as his main position but his athleticism makes him a capable OF as well. He showed some arm strength, throwing 85mph on the day. Rogers bat & tools should make him a strong follow going forward. 

+ 2022 1B Shane Melick (Ironwood Ridge)- Melick turned in a solid day across the board. At 6-foot-3 200-pounds, his strength stood out for his age with some durability and athleticism to build off. He ran a 7.36 60-yard dash on the day. Melick also showed some power potential of his own in his round of BP with a gap to gap approach, working up to 94mph exit velocity. Looked to drive the baseball in the air with good bat speed & efficient path to the baseball. Showed athletic actions in the infield with carry on his throws. 

+ 2021 OF PK Walsh (Junipero Serra, CA)- Walsh is another player that shouldn't be uncommitted too much longer. Turned in arguably one of the best all around performances of the day at the Tucson ID. At 6-foot-2 185-pounds, Walsh sports a lean body with long legs, good athleticism and strength. Showed some good tools. Ran a 6.68 60-yard dash with easy actions in the OF. 85mph projectable arm strength. Showed good feel for the barrel with fast hands in his round of BP with consistent hard contact, working the middle of the field. Hit several balls in the upper 90's, topping out at 100.8mph per Trackman. Walsh's athleticism & tools should make him a strong follow. 

+ 2024 C Jose Simon Aguirre (Salpointe Catholic)- Aguirre had a pretty impressive day when compared to everyone at the event and he's just a 2024 grad. At 5-foot-10 145-pounds, Aguirre has a lean projectable body with some quick twitch actions. Started out the day running a 6.92 6-yard dash. Hit from a narrow athletic base with open stance. Used a leg kick tigger with fast hands to create leverage with a mid/ pull approach, line drive contact. Hit several balls in the mid 90's, working up to 95mph. Behind the plate, he showed above average feel for the position with the top times to 2nd base on the day, 2.08-2.14 pop times with 74mph arm strength. Should be a follow over next couple years. 

+ 2022 OF Tanner Holland (Hamilton)- 5-foot-11 180-pounds, lean body, above average strength. Showed some of the most raw athleticism out of all the players at the event. Started out the day running a 6.38 & 6.49 60-yard dash. Used his raw athleticism at the plate, showing some of his natural strength through contact. Athletic open stance, pull approach, above average bat speed. 97mph exit velocity. Above average athlete in the OF with actions that can be refined with more focus. Has athleticism to make positive adjustments across the board. Development should be followed closely. 

+ 2021 RHP Brady Nelson (Ironwood Ridge)- 6-foot-2 170-pounds, long athletic frame, some strength & athleticism. We last saw Nelson back at our Preseason All-State event at the beginning of January where he showed some upside on the mound, sitting 80-83mph with his FB. He has made a bit of jump since then. Today, Nelson sits 86-87mph consistently with his FB. Throws from a H 3/4 arm slot with short loose arm action, showing above average arm speed. Good shoulder to hip separation with athletic finish. Misses down in the zone. Throws CH from a lower slot at 81-83mph. CV sat  68-70mph, 2300rpm.
