Week 2: Power 25 Update

Shea Sbranti
Arizona Scouting Director

Today marks the first AIA Power 25 update of the season after a busy week of games. With some major upsets and new teams making statements early, the Arizona staff has made adjustments to the AIA Power 25 Rankings. PBR Arizona has been hosting events, scouting games, and gathering info from coaches as we approached this day so we could guarantee you our best effort while covering the high school season. Each week, the Power 25 rankings will be updated, along with: team notes, and Game of the week coverage. While we are only posting the regular season records, pre season tournaments were taken into account for this weeks rankings update!

Climbing

+Chaparral (2-0) - Off to a great start to the season is the Chaparral Firebirds. The Firebirds started off hot where they made a big statement at this years PBR First Look tournament going 3-2 with a big 10-7 win over Orange Lutheran (CA). Outside of tournament play the Firebirds are currently 2-0 on the season with wins over Canyon View and Willow Canyon.

+Corona Del Sol (2-0) - Another team making an impression at this years PBR First Look, was Corona Del sol. The Aztecs came out of the gate swinging with two big wins over #15 Chandler and #16 Red Mountain. Corona is lead by left handed pitcher Arizona State commit Cole Carlon. In his last outing Carlon threw a complete game shutout with 11Ks vs a tough Chandler High School team. The Aztecs have a big game ahead of them tomorrow as they take on #2 Basha.

+Queen Creek (1-1) - Making one of the biggest jumps in the first round of rankings updates is the Queen Creek Bulldogs. The Bulldogs started their pre season tournament with a stunning 4-0 record beating previously #3 Brophy by a score of 8-3 and #15 Chandler 6-0. While the Bulldogs may have a young team this season, they have plenty talent to make a run at this years state title. Queen Creek will face off against #10 Liberty this Wednesday.

+Pinnacle (3-0) - Coming in at the #12 spot after a big opening week of baseball is the Pinnacle Pioneers. The Pioneers started their season off in fashion with a 10-6 victory at home vs Brophy. On the mound the Pioneers are lead by senior right handed pitcher and Gonzaga commit Samuel Round and offensively by uncommitted senior Juan Kalemera. Kalemera is currently hitting .444 with 5 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run and 10 RBI's. The Pioneers have a big week ahead of them where they take on #8 Corona Del Sol and #13 Desert Vista.

Falling

+Brophy (1-2) - The Broncos started the season off at the #3 spot in the AIA Power 25 and currently find themselves at #7 going into week 2 of the regular season, after costly losses to Mountain Ridge and Pinnacle. The Broncos still hold an incredibly talented roster, but just haven't been able to get the bats going as of late. We fully expect to see the Broncos bounce back in the oncoming weeks to make a push back in the top 5.

+Red Mountain (0-3) - Starting the season at #11 in the AIA Power 25 and dropping down to the #16 spot is the Red Mountain Lions. The Mountain Lions have had arguably the toughest opening schedule in the state going up against #6 SD O'Connor, #8 Corona Del Sol and #7 Brophy. However, with tough losses to all of them the Mountain Lions made the fall. The roster still features an abundance of talent at the plate and on the mound. With another tough week ahead we look forward to seeing how Red Mountain responds.

+Canyon View (1-1) - Starting the season at the #8 Spot in the AIA Power 25 and dropping down to #14 is the Canyon View Jaguars. The Jaguars opened up their season in the PBR First Look tournament with a tough 0-4 record. The Jaguars however are not a team to count out, with two Grand Canyon Commits on the mound between Connor Mattison and Austin Kalsec. The Jaguars will be a tough matchup for any team moving forward in the season.

newcomers

+Campo Verde (2-1) - Newcomers coming in at #19 is the Campo Verde Coyotes. The Coyotes came out swinging early in the season with a 3-1 record in the PBR First Look Tournament, taking down #16 Red Mountain, and California schools Ocean View, and St Joseph. Campo holds a talented lineup from 1-9 in the batting order. We look forward to following Campo this week as they take on Higley, Desert Mountain and Highland.

+Desert Ridge (1-2) - Breaking the AIA Power 25 rankings coming in at #25 is Desert Ridge. While the regular season record may not show it the Jaguars started off the season in tournament play going a perfect 4-0 with two tight losses to #2 Basha by a score of 1-0 and #1 Hamilton 8-6. The Jaguars are lead by senior catcher Gonzaga Commit Gio Melchione who is currently hitting .429 with 3 doubles and 5 RBI's. The Arizona staff doesn't see the Jaguars leaving the top 25 any time soon as they go into another tough week of games.
