We would like to thank all who participated in our first inaugural event this past week: The 2018 BC Open ID. This was a great opportunity for 2018-2021 prospects to be identified before season, create and update their profiles, as well see where they stack up with their peers. Many players impressed during their individual workouts at the showcase.

In the coming weeks, we will be adding and updating profiles for each of the players in attendance, including complete analysis and video.

BC Insider: 2018 BC Open ID - Quick Hits

TOP ARMS

Eli Saul RHP / 1B / Prince of Wales, BC / 2019

Report: At 6-foot-5, 205-pounds,  this right-hander definitely passes the eye test. Saul was very impressive during his bullpen session showing a heavy fastball consistently sitting in the upper 80s and hitting 90 mph on more than one occasion. Saul accompanies his strong fastball with a quality change up at 73-76 with late ride down and in to right handed hitters and a slider sitting consistently 77-78 mph. Saul looks to be one of the top 2019 arms in BC, as he continues to grow and add strength he will lean out so expect bigger things to come for this UBC Thunder product.

Ryan Scott RHP / OF / Langley, BC / 2019

Report: Showing an easy smooth repeatable delivery, this 6-foot-2, 190-pound right-hander  Scott impressed during his session showing three quality pitches. His fastball consistently in the 87-88 range and was able to hit 89 mph at the end of his pen. His 12/6 curveball was solid in the 70-72 range with good late break. Scott also showed good arm action on his change up 74-77 and was able to live consistently down in the zone with it. This uncommitted 2019 grad filled up the zone during his session and expect that fastball to read 90mph consistently very soon. Scott is a legit prospect from the 19’ class and is one to keep an eye on this season.

Jack Seward RHP / Port Moody, BC / 2020

Report: A 2020 grad standing 6-foot-2, 160-pounds, Seward is a tall lanky right-handed pitcher with a lively arm. Seward sat 83-85 on his fastball with some late ride on his two seem in on righties. He touched 86 mph on his fastball to end his session. Seward showed a slider sitting 70-73 with swing and miss 10-4 shape and action. He also showed a changeup that was 78-80 mph and has the makings of being a solid pitch in his arsenal. Seward has a lot of room to add strength and fill out his frame and expect him to do so over the next year. As a 2020 he is pitching at the senior PBL level and is expected to throw a lot of innings for a young Coquitlam Reds squad.

TOP BATS

Brandon Nicoll C / OF / Langley Senior, BC / 2019

Report: This 6-foot, 190-pound catcher/third baseman 2019 grad had the highest exit velocity off the bat of the event at 97 mph from the right side. This Island product has made huge strides over the past year, Nicol was also named one of the top swings in the event and named as one of two showing the most raw power hitting a number of balls to the fence during BP. The ball makes that different “sound” coming off his bat compared to others in his class. Look for Nicol to continue to add strength this year and keep an eye on this bat as we expect big numbers.

Daniel Martin OF / SS / Langley, BC / 2019

Report: 2019 Niagara commit, will play both infield and outfield this season. This 6-foot-1, 195-pound left-handed hitter had one of the easiest swings of the event with a quiet load showing excellent bat speed and power to all fields with a simple repeatable swing with no wasted movement. His BP session was full of line drives to all fields and showed good quick twitch muscles reacting to pitches in. He had a top exit velocity off the tee of 87 mph, Martin will be leaned on for big numbers this season.

Ryan Beitel SS / RHP / Langley Secondary, BC / 2019

Report: This 2019 6-foot-2, 180-pound right-handed hitting shortstop from Langley put on a power display at the BC Open launching two home runs and hitting a number to the fence with an exit velocity of 88 mph off the tee. Beitel has worked hard over the winter adding some serious pop and added with quick hands is a threat in any lineup. He is a multi tool player, has a long athletic frame and is a strong defensive presence up the middle with good velocity across the diamond being clocked at 83 mph. Expect big numbers for this up and coming prospect.

TOP GLOVES

Kieran Bowles 2B / SS / NA, BC / 2018

Report: This 2018 second baseman from Parksville showed very well defensively at the BC Open. Bowles has good range to both sides and shows quick feet while staying under control. Is athletic and showed this by making a few nice plays throwing on the run off balance with considerable arm strength. Shows quick hands on turning the double play with a quick transfer. Mainstay middle infielder for the Parksville Royals of the BCPBL.

Tommy Kreitz C / OF / Langley Senior , BC / 2019

Report: This athletic 5-foot-10, 175-pounds catcher from the Langley Blaze shows all the tools you look for in a top catcher in any level of baseball. Had a pop time of 1.93, consistently at the event clocked at 76 mph out of the hand. Shows excellent feet getting into good throwing position. Receives the ball extremely well with good framework. Can also contribute offensively as he had a very good exit velocity off the bat of 86 mph.

Yosuke Fujie C / SS / Yale secondary, BC / 2020

Report: This 2020 switch hitting Catcher/middle infielder for the Abbotsford Cardinals is a solid defensive infielder but impressed behind the plate at the BC Open. Standing only 5-foot-7 and 140-pounds, he plays much bigger than his size would suggest. His pop time was the tops at the event 1.89 -1.92. Is a little wild with his mechanics but fires strikes to 2nd base and is consistent at 76 mph out of the hand, can block well but has a little room for improvement on his receiving. The kid is a bulldog and puts in the work, this will be a big year development wise for Fujie but with a consistent pop time in the 1.9 range already look for big things from him in the future.
