Canada's Top Uncommitted Catchers

Josh Arce
Scout, PBR Canada

Spring Training is now just six weeks away as teams across the country begin to ramp up, preparing for the 2023 season. As we look ahead to the upcoming season, there's still a ton of high-end uncommitted talent on the board in several different classes.

Below, we take a look at three of the top unsigned catchers in the country with one from British Columbia, one from Quebec and another from Ontario. The trio stood out every time we saw them throughout the summer and are are primed for another strong season as they continue to draw interest from college coaches.

Brayden Ricketts C / 3B / Jean Augustine Secondary School, ON / 2024

Ricketts was one of the better left-handed bats that we saw last year in Ontario’s 2024 class. A physical 6-foot, 200-pound frame that creates loud contact with loft to his pull-side with good extension. Ricketts showed well against top competition with multiple XBH’s and quality AB’s and has a max EV of 95.6 mph. Behind the dish, he receives well and shows a quick transfer and footwork with a 1.94-1.97 pop-time. The bat is what catches the eye, but there is defensive upside in Ricketts’ game, who’s in gear to have a big summer as one of the top uncommitted players in the country.

Justin Anctil C / 3B / Saint-Gabriel, QC / 2024

Anctil showed defensive upside this summer at multiple national events. An above average receiver with soft hands, Anctil presents the ball well on low pitches and is very mobile behind the plate with balls in the dirt making difficult blocks to his sides. There is present catch and throw with a very quick transfer and a strong arm. Anctil has a pop time of 1.82-1.95 and a 81 mph C velo. In the box, it’s a balanced, line-drive swing that works gap-to-gap with some juice. We’ve seen him up to 94.7 mph max EV. Anctil’s name should come up when discussing the better uncommitted catchers in Canada.

Declan Spooner C / 1B / foothills composite , BC / 2024

Spooner opened a lot of eyes with his work behind the dish and in the box at the Future Games this past summer. Defensively, Spooner shows soft hands with agile actions/good anticipation on balls in the dirt and a consistent pop-time at 2.06-2.10. Spooner was one of the more consistent hitters on Team Canada at the Future Games, collecting multiple hits against high-velo arms with a simple/compact stroke that is quick through the zone with some thump to his pull-side. Spooner, the No. 1 ranked 2024 in BC is one of the top uncommitted catchers in Canada.
