The 2025 California high school baseball season is quickly approaching and, as usual, excitement is abound throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across California.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in their respective CIF Section Championship Game, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview these individual programs across California. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, eventually releasing our Preseason Power 25 rankings.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across California. Each week we will be releasing our Power 25, Players of the Week, Diamond Notes, podcasts, and much more.

Our 2025 preseason coverage continues today with a preview of the Cathedral Catholic Dons.

BOTTOM LINE

This club is very well rounded from the athleticism in our lineup with power potential and the ability to play defense all mixing with a strong pitching staff that once all our new faces are eligible to take the field should make it one of if not the most talented rosters in San Diego. With all the pieces we are brining to the table we have high hopes for how the 2025 season can play out for us. - Coach Remiker

PREP BASEBALL CA STAFF’S TAKE

The Dons have lost significant parts of their lineup and rotation with the departure of C/OF Eli Selga (SDSU), 3B Anthony Perritano (USC), C Michael Podstreleny (UC Irvine), INF/RHP Vincent Venverloh (USD), INF Brooks Bachman (Colorado Mesa), OF/1B Noah Tenbrook (Grossmont CC) and RHP Trey Telfer (Indiana). That being said, multiple transfers and key contributors on their JV squad will look to replace their stacked 2024 class. A core of SS Alex Harrington, OF Hunter Harrington, and OF Trey Gudoy III will be joined by INF Joshua Priest and LHP/1B Jose Partida. On the mound, LHP Owen Smyth is the biggest returner, logging 51.0 innings at a 1.65 ERA. Adding to the staff is RHP Shoei Darvish and the aforementioned LHP Jose Partida. The lineup and the pitching should produce this year with big-time bats and arms. That being said, the invaluable experience of having a lot of returning pieces is slightly lost with this group. If the Dons can stay healthy, especially the arms, and build a new identity with all the new faces on varsity, they seem poised for another strong season under Gary Remiker. - Matt Monk San Diego Scout
