CCS Focus (CA): Round 1 Update Pt 2

Central Coast Section, CA - The rain came in pushing back some games to Monday while taking away the neutral site game and moving it to the highest seeds home fields. Even with the rain coming down, there were games that got through with surprise scores through the Divisions.

In Division 1 No. 10 Mountain View keeps making a run with a victory over No. 2 Los Altos while No. 4 Leland came out on top over No. 5 Carlmont in a close and hard played game. On Monday, No. 1 Leigh walked off No. 9 Branham and No. 6 Bellarmine advanced over No. 14 Piedmont Hills.

In Division 2, No 1. Monterey came from behind to top No. 8 Burlingame. Monday saw No. 12 Sacred Heart Cathedral continue their run with a victory over No. 13 Willow Glen. No 3 Christopher squeaked out a victory over No. 11 St. Ignatius and No. 2 Aptos got the victory over No. 10 Capuchino.

In Division 3 all games finished on Saturday with No. 5 The Kings Academy over No. 4 Palma being the lone upset. No. 1 Pacific Grove bea No. 8 Summit-Shasta and No. 2 Menlo and No 3. Monte Vista Christian each picked up shutout victories.

The Open Division finalized with No. 1 Valley Christian beating No. 8 Palo Alto on Monday, the same day No. 5 Serra went to No. 4 Santa Cruz to pick up their victory. No. 2 Archbishop Mitty beat No. 7 St. Francis in a close one that was a pitchers duel on Saturday. The final Open division game between No. 3 Los Gatos and No. 6 San Benito was my matchup of the week.

GAME NOTES:

I went to Bellarmine for the Open Division matchup between No. 3 Los Gatos & No. 6 San Benito. It was a great game between two evenly matched teams. The game started off with an interesting situation when 2020 Los Gatos SS Tommy Troy (Stanford Commit) hit the 1st pitch of the game over the head of the CF for a standup double, but was called back as the 1st base umpire had called timeout from a player on the field before the pitch. The flow of the game completely changed when Troy struck out and San Benito 2019 RHP Jordan Yeager cruised through the first 2 innings with a 2B from Los Gatos 2021 DH/RHP Tommy Splaine (Arizona Commit) being the only runner.

In the 3rd, San Benito loaded the bases on a 1B, HBP and BB before 2019 C Jacob Burley (Brown Commit) drilled a FB into the RCF gap scoring two runs and setting a 2nd and 3rd situation with 1 out.

2020 RF Marcus Aranda hit a shot right at the CF but it was far enough to score a 3rd run. 2020 1B Aidan Shaw made it 4-0 with a hard hit ball down the left field line but ended the innings trying to extend the single. Los Gatos responded when 2020 C Jared Quant started the 3rd ripping a double to the RCF gap before coming around on an error on a double play turn. 2019 OF Brennan Kingpicked up the 2nd run of the game when he laced a single into LF. That would be all the runs for the Wildcats, whose offense went cold as the rain came in not getting a hit till the start of the 7th.

San Benito looked like they were going to add more to the scoreboard in the 4th when they loaded the bases on 2019 RHP Trevor Allen (SJSU Commit). 2021 RHP Tommy Splaine replaced Allen coming in and effectively shutting down the Haybalers offense with a plus CHG keeping them off his FB and getting lots of swings and misses when he needed them. Splaine ended up with 7K’s in 3.2 IP, giving up 3 hits and a BB.

San Benito’s starter 2019 RHP Jordan Yeager went 6 IP with 2R (0ER) striking out 3, walking 1 and giving up 4 hits. He induced a lot of weak pop ups and easy ground outs changing speeds and throwing three distinct pitches with good command. 2019 RHP Moises Salazar came in for the save in the 7th having two runners on and bringing the winning run to the plate, but a double play ended it and pushed San Benito to the Semi-Finals at San Jose Stadium with the 4-2 victory.
