IRVINE, CALIF. The Inaugural 14U/13U California Select got underway yesterday with some notable teams getting things started in Day One of the event operated by PBR Tournaments.

For us it was an opportunity to get a glimpse of the players coming up the pipeline with eyes set on becoming prospects somewhere along the way. As is with any group of players this age there is always some size, strength and even skill separation that catches your attention and that certainly was the case.

But there was a sufficient mix of players throughout Day One of the event to keep us busy at the beautiful Great Park Complex. Let’s dive into some notable standouts from Thursday’s action at the California Select.

2025 RHP/INF Hayden George - Saddleback Cowboys

George had himself a heck of an afternoon going two-for-three at the plate with a stolen and three runs scored with a pair of hard hits balls. He really stood out at the plate where he struck out seven batters over four innings pitched on only 48 pitches. Carried a 79% first pitch strike percentage in this start. Long, lean build with way more coming.

2025 Dylan Perry - BPA

Long, lean righty with feel for a three-pitch mix all of which he was landing for strikes with fair consistency. The arm action is clean and repetitive and it’s easy to picture the frame adding mass as it continues to mature. Hitters picked him up later in the outing but his stuff was effective early.

2026 SS James Tronstein - Legacy Baseball Group

Behold the future of Harvard Westlake’s middle infield. Tronstein shows a feel for the game that belies his age and bat speed comparable to what we’d see in the Wolverines current lineup. Smashed a ball to deep left-center-field that was caught before capitalizing on a hard hit ball the other way for a double.

2025 OF Ayden Munoz - BPA

Lots to like with Munoz and it begins with the bat and the current mature approach at the plate. He’s physical for his class, but moves aggressively on the basepaths and defensively. Finished 1-for-2 with a run and walk.

2025 RHP Carson Maymo - Playa Vista Orioles

Long and lanky frame with some moving parts add to the deception with Maymo. Showed a three-pitch mix in warmups but relied mainly on the fastball/slider combo in game. Got the final six out in 24 pitches with a pair of strikes to earn the win.

2025 RHP CJ Weinstein - Canes

Fantastic overall opening game for Weinstein as he threw three perfect innings that included one strikeout for the Canes while also going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Shows plenty of athleticism both on the mound and at the plate where it’s a simple, quiet setup with some barrel awareness.

2025 SS Gavin Hottle - Next Level Baseball

Catches your attention when you see him warming up given his size and ability to move with it. Plays low to the ground on the dirt with throws that are on a line. He uses a simple, upright stance that allows him to explode into the ball with fair hand/bat speed presently and get the barrel into the zone consistently and with some power.

2025 SS Tyler Dunning - OC Tribe

The future JSerra Lion has the look of the current JSerra Lion shortstop showed that he’s going to position himself to crack the lineup when he calls St. Pierre field home. A slick fielding, and strong shortstop, Dunning flashed the type of instincts and actions to get excited about. Makes all the throws with low effort.

2025 SS/RHP Mike Velardez - SoCal Bombers

Velardez threw three strong innings striking out five while walking only one on 48 pitches. He flashed a late biting sharp breaking ball that buckled hitters while getting swing/miss on fastball’s up. The command of the fastball stood out as he worked black-to-black in addition to  up-and-down.

2025 C Carter Enoch - Saddleback Cowboys

Enoch showed enough in his three at-bats today to convince us his hit tool will fit right in at Santa Margarita when he arrives in the fall. There’s quickness in the hands and barrel and his ability to manipulate the plane of the barrel is unique in hitters at this age. He showed some pop with a pair of extra base hits on the day along with speed out of the box.

2025 1B/RHP John Petrie II - Canes

Demonstrated impressive power on the day not only with the only Home Run on the day but with a deep fly ball out to center field. Also hit a ball hard to the shortstop for a groundout. Fair runner with athleticism around the bag at first. Looking forward to seeing him on the mound.
