Boras Classic South: Tuesday Notebook

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA—The Boras Classic South kicked off Tuesday between JSerra HS, CA, and Mater Dei HS, CA. I spent the day at JSerra and saw a host of arms, starting with a showdown between RHP Cole Winn (Orange Lutheran HS, CA) and LHP Erik Tolman (El Toro HS, CA).

Winn wasn’t quite as sharp with his command as he was at the National High School Invitational last week, but he was still quite good. He started out with his fastball sitting 94-96 mph against the first two hitters, striking them both out, but then he started to miss the zone and dialed it back to 91-93. His fastball sat in the low 90s for the rest of the outing and he touched 94-95 when he wanted it. The slider looked better in this outing, showing sharp break in the low 80s. He also mixed in his mid-70s curveball with 12/6 shape and depth. In five innings, he allowed one run on three hits and one walk while striking out seven. Winn remained in the game as the DH and hit a home run to left field.

For Tolman, it was a tough day as he allowed seven runs (five earned) on nine hits and four walks while striking out three. His fastball was 85-88, touching 89 and his slider was anywhere from 71-76. It was inconsistent, but flashed sharp break and 3/4 tilt at 74-76. It gets loose at times, but he can bury at the bottom of the zone and on the back foot of righties.

Here are notes from the rest of Tuesday’s action at JSerra…
