Draft Spotlight: RHP/SS Brandon Dieter

State Scouting Director

Before a projected first rounder moved into the state, there were few players in California with as much helium as Stanford commit Brandon Dieter of South Hills High School in West Covina, CA. The right-handed pitcher/shortstop proved himself worthy of that attention after a solid to spectacular showings at the NHSI, Area Code Games before going on to earn Team MVP honors for the gold medal winning 18U National Team.

The expectations were high coming into Dieter's senior season but the question most had was is he going to hit or pitch?

When you look at his career offensive numbers it's reasonable to conclude Dieter

could develop into a future pro shortstop given his defensive prowess there. A career .308 hitter, Dieter chipped in 95 hits, 50 RBI, 57 runs, and three home runs over his four year career. You combine the numbers and the defense and add his mature approach at the plate and it's easy to see why some like him as an everyday player.

Then you look at both his numbers and the timeliness of his performances and you understand why those that love him on the mound feel that way. Consider that Dieter pitched one inning his freshman campaign and finished his career at 19-6, 1.14 ERA, 144K, 36 BB, 172.4 IP which included a stellar performance at the NHSI in 2017. He also got the win going 5 innings in the Gold Medal game for the 18U National Team.

I saw Dieter pitch against Servite in the opening round of the CIF SS Division I playoffs and it was classic Dieter. He had his fastball working 88-90 early before settling in at 86-87. After giving up a double in the 5th inning Dieter made a move to a cutter at 83-85 that resulted in weak contact the rest of the way. The double ended a streak of 14 consecutive batters retired. Dieter's slider was its usual reliable out pitch throughout the game as he successfully threw it as his strikeout pitch four times.

Dieter threw a career low 33.1 innings in his senior campaign, but he has come up big time and again over his career when his team has needed him. Stanford would be thrilled to land another SoCal product that projects as much as Dieter does. Given the penchant the Cardinal have shown of playing the best players regardless of class, Dieter is certain to fit right in on the Farm should that be his destination after the next couple of months.

Let's take a closer look at Brandon Dieter.
