Game Notes (CA): South Torrance v Hart

Ryan Ozella
California Area Scout

Newhall, CA - I traveled down to SoCal and was able to catch the alma mater Hart Indians at home against the South Torrance Spartans. I'm always amazed to see how much talent is in California and this viewing was no different, giving me a group of Uncommitted players to take plenty of notes on.

GAME NOTES:

South Torrance wasted no time putting their offense on the board scoring 3 in the 1st on 3 hits and an error. The Spartans added to the scorebook with 2 more in the 4th on 3 more hits before getting their final 2 runs in the 6th on 2 hits a walk and an HBP. The Spartan pitchers kept the Indians offense at bay with 2021 RHP Jack Tuttle and 2021 RHP Jason Davis going the first 6 and allowing no runs to cross. Hart had chances with runners in scoring position in the 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th innings but couldn’t find a big hit to get runners in until late in the 7th. South Torrance got the victory 7-1 and showed they’ve got the talent to match up with anyone in the South Bay.

PLAYERS OF NOTE:

2019 1B Patrick Arman (Hart) - Uncommitted. Was on base three times and the only Hart player who had consistent AB’s. Showed a large lean frame with a compact and controlled swing driving liners all around the field. During the game he had two 1B’s hard through the middle and 4-hole. Athletic around the bag and shows plenty of arm strength; also a pitcher. L/R profile and plenty of space in the frame to keep adding strength.

2019 OF Kendall Thomas (Hart) - Uncommitted. Large, very lean frame that is athletically built with squared shoulders. Showed off a very strong arm in RF during pre-game keeping throws on a low trajectory and quick feet that can work behind the baseball. At the plate had a pull focus picking up a hit that way. It’s the type of frame that could easily make another physical jump.

2020 C Jacob Marquez (Hart) - Arizona Commit. Wide shoulders with tight waist and strength throughout; type of frame you can project some pop from. S/R catcher stayed on the left side during this game picking up a hit in his 1st AB on a liner to LF. Arm was fringy between innings (2.13-2.20) with a high release keeping the ball on the bag showing limited life. Blocking was good keeping balls in front of him, but the glove hand was a bit stabby and stiff. Strength in frame and chance to hit from both sides still gives profile some projection.

2020 C Collin Wong (South) - Uncommitted. Wide and full medium frame with longer legs. Was good behind the plate limiting runners and showing lateral ability to keep blocks in front of him. Fringey arm that’s playable with a quick release from compact actions (2.16-2.18 Pop). Showed flat bat with some strength in the frame singling back up the middle to drive in the 2nd run and showing fringe-average run times (4.52 H-1st).

2021 RHP Jason Davis (South) - Uncommitted. High waist with length in the legs and lean frame that is very projectable. Showed off his arm during pre-game in LF letting the arm loose on a couple of balls that took off from him. Hopped on the mound and showed a lot of projectability with his skills on the mound. The arm is compact with M-3/4 release point and showed easy velocity. FB 78-82 T83 MPH with bits of arm-side run and getting some swing and miss when going up the ladder. SLD 60-62 MPH was short with limited depth; feel came and go. CHG 66-67 MPH showed some arm side bottom using it to both sides of the plate. Both off-speed pitches need to develop more, but I liked that he was using them and trying to get them to become better pitches. I liked the overall profile and would not be surprised to see some major jumps over the summer/fall.

IN-DEPTH COVERAGE:

2019 3B Carey Arbolida (South) - Uncommitted. Physical, large frame that is strong and full build; very wide shoulders with strength, showing agility in the lower half...
