LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - As we recently released our updated Class of 2021 state rankings we thought we'd provide you a closer look at a few of these prospects. Rankings are never easy and we certainly know they are not an exact science. Much of rankings is predicated on what our team of scouts have seen, but given the national scope of the Prep Baseball Report network, we are more than able to access a library of over 100,00 players nationwide to compare apples-to-apples.

It's a given that California is either 1 or 1a in terms of talent in any given year. There isn't that much debate as to who the top players are because they've generally been identified at a much younger age. After all, the top players are easily identified. However, given the amount of games, innings, at-bats, pitches our team has seen over the last two-to-three years of watching this class, we feel confident knowing that nobody in the industry has seen more players in addition to those easily identified from California than our collective team.

And because of that level of confidence we feel our rankings best reflect the overall talent in the state.

Earlier we looked at left-handed pitchers, right-handed pitchers, catchersfirst basemansecond baseman and third baseman. Now it's time for a few of the top ranked shortstops in the state for 2021 class. You can read full available scouting reports and view available video by clicking on the the player name.

THE PLAYERS

#2 MARCELO MAYER - EASTLAKE - USC COMMIT

The top ranked short-stop in the 2021 class checks the boxes in the tools department and possesses an ideal 6-foot-3 175 pound frame. The extra-base hit machine has already put together an impressive resume with his performance for Team USA and showing at the Underclass Area Code games.

#7 MAXWELL MUNCY - THOUSAND OAKS - ARKANSAS

Muncy passes the eye-test when you watch him play and it’s easy to look ahead a few years at what may be. Muncy’s ability to manipulate the barrel through the zone separates him offensively. Defensively he’s a twitchy shortstop with good footwork that can make plays laterally with ease to go with an arm that can make throws from all angles.

#12 DAVIS DIAZ - ACALANES - VANDERBILT COMMIT

All-around offensive contributor who isn’t afraid to lay down a bunt when needed or drive in runs with his gap power. Patient hitter who doesn’t try to do too much at the plate. Defensively sound with quick feet and a quick release. Safe bet at the college level and beyond.

#18 JABIN TROSKY - CARMEL - OREGON STATE COMMIT

Defensive ability and actions project as plus down the line. Rare switch-hitter that shows the ability to sustain that ability at the next level. Above-average speed and footwork give him an extra boost in all facets of the game. Fundamentally sound with switch-hitting ability gives him a high ceiling at the next level.

#21 ETHAN GOURSON - POINT LOMA - ARIZONA COMMIT

Smooth overall game with natural ability and actions on the field. Left-handed hitter who likes to pull but has the ability to hit the ball the opposite field. Flashy feel on the field and present tools project well with fine tuning at the next level.
