LA Open: Pitchers Analysis

Les Lukach
State Scouting Director

The Inaugural Los Angeles Showcase took place at Maverick Field in West Covina, California and was open to players in all classes. The event attracted over 50 players. The participants were put through a pro-style workout that saw them run the 60 yard dash, batting practice, and a defensive workout before the pitchers took the stage to throw their bullpens and close out the event.

As part of our continuing coverage of the event we will continue to break down all the data, roll out stats, content, and videos from the event, but first here are some quick hits from what we saw at Maverick Field.

In this edition we'll take a look at middle infielders. Click on each players profile for their full videos from the event.

Scouting Report

10/20/18 - Los Angeles Open - Five-foot-7, 190-pounds, medium frame. Dominguez shows some rhythm to his delivery where he keeps his shoulders level and lands inline and square to the target before falling off to the first base side of the mound. Arm works from a high 3/4 slot with quickness and some effort. Fastball shows life as it enters the zone on a straight path with inconsistent command. Curveball shows late with sharp biting action down around the knees from nearly the same arm speed as his fastball and 12/6 shape. Spin is tight on the pitch while working down. Pitch really projects given his current command.

10/20/18 - Los Angeles Open - Five-foot-7, 190-pounds, medium frame with some strength in the lower half and through the shoulders down into the arms. At the plate he starts with a slightly open, wide stance. Uses a slight stride trigger mechanism with hands above the shoulders. Quick hands with excellent barrel feel. Tends to get to the ball out front with present bat speed with a short path to the ball and extension through it. Line drive hitter with a middle-right approach but shows the ability to pull the ball with present power. Defensively projects more as a corner infielder presently. Footwork can get choppy and stop at the ball, but the hands/arm work from the left side of the infield. Exchanges are clean/quick with enough present arm strength to make throws from multiple angles.

Scouting Report

10/20/18 - Los Angeles Open - Five-foot-10, 175-pounds, medium/large frame with proportional strength throughout and squared shoulders. Starts tall before dipping and driving down the mound where he gains ground after a high leg kick. Lands square to the target in an athletic position. Has a pronounced shoulder/back turn adding deception to his delivery and hides the ball well. Arm works from a 3/4 slot with average speed and long action in the back. Effort is regular; not stressed. Fastball shows cut action with late, hard life. Command was inconsistent with the pitch. Curveball showed early with 10/4 shape and he threw it for strikes consistently from the same arm speed as the fastball. Knuckleball is a very intriguing pitch given his ability to throw it for strikes consistently and the release from near fastball arm speed and it's nasty, sinking action. Projectable pitcher.

10/20/18 - Los Angeles Open - Five-foot-10, 175-pounds, medium frame with strength in the lower half, squared shoulders with strength down to the wrists. Echevarria came ready to get after it and it shows itself when you discuss early standouts. Echevarria had a very loud round of BP where he barreled balls to the gaps throughout the round. Shows present bat speed and uses his proportional strength very well. Gets his barrel on plane and its keeps it in the zone a long time. Defensively he showed to have enough arm strength and accuracy to stay at third base. Showed average range with good lateral movements and quickness. Throws were accurate across the diamond. On the mound Echevarria showed a loose, compact, quick arm through to a high-¾ slot with regular effort. Fastball shows sharp, downer cutting action presently. Seemed as though the more it cut the more his command wavered, but the pitch was nasty. Curveball shows sharp, sweeping movement. He also shows some fee for the changeup that flashes fading action. There's some deception to his delivery as he starts closed and uses a short back turn to hide the ball.

Scouting Report

10/20/18 - Los Angels Open - Five-foot-9, 160-pounds, Medium frame with strength throughout, particularly in the lower half. Works from 3/4 slot down the mound with quickness to both the arm and the delivery and not much effort. Tends to fall off to the first base side of the mound after release. Fastball shows a tick of run back to the arm side with effective command while working to both sides of the plate. Curveball is a gradual break with 11/5 shape. Min shows command of the pitch that starts at the knees before falling off the table. Min also showed a knuckle-change that had the action of a splitter. It was effective pitch that he showed command of and drew some raised eyebrows from our scouts.

10/20/18 - Los Angeles Open - Five-foot-9, 160-pounds, medium frame with thickness and strength throughout. Body is well put together and projects to add more physical strength. At the plate Min shows a short-to-the-ball, fast bath path that resulted in line drives to all fields favoring left-center field. Shows very good bat speed from his fast hands with enough strength to maintain his barrel on a consistent plane without sacrificing power for it. Shows quickness to his overall defensive game. Moves well laterally when blocking and and hops to his feet in ready-to-throw position with proper footwork. Presents a large target with his broad chest spacing of his feet. Arm was mostly accurate - one throw sailed - and popped consistently in the 1.97-2.04 range. On the mound Min shows feel for three pitches from a three-quarter arm slot. His fastball shows some late downer movement which he starts down. Curveball is a gradual breaker with 11/5 break. Min showed excellent command of this pitch during his outing. He shows feel for what he called a knuckleball but moved like a split-change. It was an intriguing pitch given his present command and the movement of the pitch.

Scouting Report

10/20/18 - Los Angeles Open - Martine is an athletic player who showed well in the outfield, at the plate, and on the mound. The freshman ran a 7.22 60-yard dash to open things up before getting into the batter's box where he showed a middle approach with quick-to-fast bat-to-ball skills. Sets up balance and quiet; it's a simple setup and go. Showed feel for the barrel by spraying line drives to all fields. In the outfield he showed good body control and athleticism in charging/gathering balls. His arm has present strength with accuracy from a high-¾ slot. Arm is fast which he showed on the mound where he's raw but oozes projection. The righties arm is whippy and loose from a full arm path through to the same high-¾ slot as he shows in the outfield. His command of all pitches was erratic but all three flashed above average at one point or another and all coming from the same arm speed. Fastball shows late running action - almost changeup like movement. His curveball was sharp with hard action late while his changeup was a softer fastball.

10/20/18 Los Angeles Open - Five-foot-10, 150-pounds. Has a lean athletic frame, young body, with time to physically mature. Ran a 7.22 60-yard dash. Scouting Report

10/20/18 - Los Angeles Open - Five-foot-10, 170-pounds, medium frame with strength throughout the frame. At the plate Heistand shows fast hands with strong feel for the barrel and the ability to drive the ball to all fields. Fast hands that he keeps inside the ball after dropping them into launch slot. Quick rotation with the hips/shoulders enhances the bat speed. At shortstop, Heistand shows fair range to both sides and possesses soft hands with clean exchanges. Throwing motion can get a little long, but possesses enough arm strength to make throws from multiple angles. Footwork is fluid with fair range to both sides. Instinctive defender who gets rid of the ball quickly. On the mound Heistand shows a clean, loose arm from a high-3/4 slot. Delivery is deliberate through to an out front release point. Fastball shows some life as it enters the zone. Shows command of the pitch. Curveball is a sharp, late biting pitch with 12/6 shape. Command of the pitch was erratic. Changeup shows late movement back to the arm side and shows fair command of the pitch. Slider looks a lot like his curveball but with downer break and movement.

Scouting Report

10/20/18 - Los Angeles Open - Five-foot-6, 145-pounds, medium frame with long limbs, large feet, and a long torso. Squared shoulders with wiry strength throughout the body. Rhythmic delivery with repeatable mechanics that finishes in an athletic position while square to the target. Arm works from a 3/4 slot with some quickness and compact action. Minimal effort. Fastball shows running life as it enters the hitting zone. Shows excellent command of the pitch that he works down in the zone with. Curveball shows late with sharp, biting action. Pitch comes from same arm speed as fastball. Shows feel for a slider that he presently commands well. The pitch has shows sinking action to the back foot of righties.

10/20/18 - Los Angeles Open - Five-foot-6, 145-pounds, lean, wiry strong frame. Noticeable strength through the lower half. The sophomore stood out from the outset of the event when he ran a solid 7.39 60 yard dash on the damp outfield grass good for the second best time among the catchers group. He carried that into his batting practice round where he shows a quick bat with a direct-to-the-ball hand path that has some whippy strength at contact. Keeps hands inside the ball showing a knack for getting the barrel on it. Maintains balance throughout swing while staying tall despite a short stride. Defensively Teunissen shows a quick release and a fast, loose arm action. Receives with soft hands. Throws had average accuracy while popping in the 1.96-2.05 range. Shows quickness in getting out of the crouch while maintaining his body control.

6/12/18 - 5-foot-6, 130-pounds, small build, lean strength, long arm action in catch/throw drills; Throws had carry and were accurate on the bag. Best pop was 2.15 with a 73 mph velocity on the throw. Athletic setup with quiet hands, receives well. Block and recovers athletically. Clean exchanges with fluid footwork through the ball and release. Ran a 7.40 60. Shows a short swing path through the ball with a middle to opposite field approach. Current ground ball hitter who projects for physical growth and added strength. Took strong round of BP with a slightly open set-up and good balance throughout. Swing can be a little stiff at times however Teunissen shows athleticism in his setup and approach.

Scouting Report

10/20/18 - Los Angeles Open - Rhodes showed one of the loosest, cleanest arm actions we saw at the showcase. Uses a deliberate delivery where he takes his hands high above his head and has a high, snappy leg kick before a his whippy arm snaps off pitch after pitch. Fastball has hard, late run back to the arm side. His curveball shows late with good depth with tight spin. He varies the shape from a true 12/6 down to 10/4 both with his above average command. Showed feel for a changeup that flashes downer fading. Slider is a potential wipeout pitch with it's late, hard biting action and tight rotation. At 6-foot, and only 145-pounds, there's a lot of room for physical growth to fill out his long, wiry strong frame and his squared shoulders.

Scouting Report

10/20/18 - Los Angeles Open - Five-foot-11, 185-pounds, medium/large frame that is thick and strong in the lower half with squared shoulders and strength down into the wrists. Russo features a loose arm that has some quickness to it from a 3/4 slot with regular effort to it. He tends to land closed with an athletic finish. Fastball shows run back to the arm side with late action. While the command was a tick erratic, he was around the zone with the pitch consistently. Russo's curveball shows early and has gradual action to it with 11/5 shape. He throws it from near fastball arm speed but tends to drop his arm with the pitch. Russo also showed feel for a changeup that shows plenty of arm side run and downer action.

Scouting Report

10/20/18 - Los Angeles Open - Five-foot-7, 137-pounds, medium frame with long limbs, long torso, large feet, squared shoulders and strength down through the arms. Athletic delivery with a pronounced shoulder turn and leg kick that helps hide the ball. Lands inline and square to target before falling off to first base side of the mound. Fastball is by-and-large a flat pitch with the occasional late, running action in on righties. His command was sporadic with the pitch. Curveball shows late with sharp, biting action. Pitch projects well for future. Left a couple curveballs up, but mainly worked below the waist with the pitch. Showed feel for a sinking and running changeup that starts at the knees.
