FOLSOM, CA. - Two of Northern California's top 2022 grads were in action as RHP Tyson DeWall(SDSU commit) got the start for Folsom HS and in the opposing line-up was C Malcolm Moore(Stanford commit). Folsom had a strong 2019 season and a nice playoff run. Seeing their team, in particular those who return from last year, it's pretty apparent why. With D1 talent up the middle of the field, their defense is extremely strong, with junior C Ryan Stafford (Cal Poly commit), senior SS Drake Digiorno (Sacramento State commit), senior CF C.J. Hutton (UC Davis commit) and senior 2B Carson Gross (uncommitted). Folsom won the game handily, as DeWall threw well, as did junior RHP Cooper Robinson. Moore did make some noise with a home run leading off the 4th inning, but that was about all McClatchy HS could muster. Also homering in the game was Folsom senior 1B Judah Morris.

2020 CF C.J. Hutton (L/L, 5-foot-9, 170-pounds) is an igniter type of lead-off hitter. Built like the college bound running back that he in fact is (will play football and baseball at UC Davis), he showed excellent pitch recognition and ability to work deep at-bats. He didn't chase out of the zone in a positive hitting count and has the bat control to spoil two strike pitches. The swing is somewhat upper body rotational but he's got plenty of bat speed and physical strength to collect extra base hits and also the footspeed to leg out infield hits (4.24 H-1st & 4.55 on a turn). With two BB and a triple (to LCF), he put his full offensive repertoire on display, while also tracking down deep fly balls with ease. At one point he put down a bunt toward 3rd base that rolled just foul and went 3.94 down the line, though he was pulling up just a bit.... 2020 SS Drake Digiorno is a 6-foot-0, 180-pound lean/athletic bodied infielder with tools that will give him a shot to play SS at the D1 level. His challenge to stick there may be his raw footspeed (went 4.65 H-1st on a ground ball to SS), but the arm is a D1 arm and his ability to play on the move and go to his backhand and make/finish plays was on display. Offensively he's got a stroke that can develop some gap to gap power as he gets stronger, with some lift through the finish, ample bat speed and a solid middle of the field approach.... 2021 C Ryan Stafford is one of the better defensive catchers in the region. Not a big body on him, but he does play bigger than his listed 5-foot-7 140-pounds (maybe a listing from 2019 season?). He's functionally strong and put together proportionally. Stafford's receiving is a plus attribute and he has what will develop into average C/T skills at the college level. Pop times were 2.01-2.07 in warm-ups, the lower time from his knees. The arm strength is fair at this time, though perhaps I wasn't seeing the best he's got, with 72 mph being his best bolt on a warm-up throw. In any case, he is extremely quiet and subtle in his receiving movements and he stuck pitches deftly. He's also quite good getting below the low pitch. All the other intangible attributes are there, hustling to back-up 1st base, leadership presence and good verbal skills. Offensively he's got a quiet set-up, hitting out of the 2-spot he sprayed a single to the right side and later slammed a single to the LCF gap. Don't let the size fool you, he's got a little pop in that frame but would be best served to stay gap to gap (which he did in each AB) and spray the ball around the yard. Good takes in plus hitting counts and willing to let it fly when he got what he wanted in those same positive counts.... 2021 RHP Cooper Robinson threw the last two innings (BB, 2 K, 0 H) and immediately drew my attention with his lean streamlined 6-foot-2 185-pound frame. Compact backside arm action, overhand slot, able to repeat the delivery and slot well. Utilized the fastball both up and down in the zone (82-84, T85) and occasional arm side run that is just enough to be effective. His best pitch is a tight 12/5 curveball that is a shorter breaking ball with late tilt deep in the zone. He repeatedly locked up hitters with the late break and also elicited multiple swing and misses to finish hitters. The mound presence was good and he looks like one to follow through the summer season. That curveball is going to be good at the college level.... Likely headed to a JC for continued development, 2020 1B Judah Morris was impressive with the bat. At 6-foot-2 245-pounds, he's got the frame to be a powerful young man though will have to work to shape himself a little more and pack on some strength within that frame. He's a right-handed hitter with a middle of the field approach that plays well with his bat speed and raw power. The swing is balanced and the path was consistent in three at-bats, with a well struck line drive to CF, a homer to CF and a hard hit 6-3 out. The 4.73 run time is not awful given that he can improve his strength and explosiveness with future training. Hidden in the 7-spot in his line-up, he's got a shot to do some real damage this season.

Folsom HS 2022 RHP Tyson DeWall is going to stay in the mix among his class pitching peers when it comes to rankings as he moves through his high school career. Long and lanky at 6-foot-2 175-pounds, he's got plenty of room within his frame to add size and strength... up to 87 w/a good CHG...
