PODCAST: Northern CA ProCase

STOCKTON, CA. - The 2019 MLB Draft was completed on June 5th and on June 9th we moved our focus to the 2020 class at the Northern California ProCase. A select group of players were invited to participate in this exclusive event geared toward draft prospects and high level collegiate talents with future draft potential. Players were put through a pro-style workout with various stats/data recorded during the workouts which can be found HERE

C Omar Plascencia (Lodi)

Omar Plascencia (uncommitted) is a name to know among a loaded 2020 catching class in Northern California. There is an ABUNDANCE of high level backstops in the region and Plascencia's tools, skills, and talents fit with the best of them. As of this posting he is uncommitted but has been mulling offers for some time. He's listed at 6-foot-0 190-pounds and he might be a smidge shorter than that and appears to be more stoutly built than 190-pounds. It's a physical, chiseled, and athletic body type that he has clearly put time into. A comp to Willson Contreras, both in regard to his body type and and athleticism, fits nicely.

Among a group of catchers who were ALL at the 2018 Area Code Underclass Games (he was not), he made a name for himself and should be in the mix for the 2019 Area Code Games. Plascencia is not only a talented player, but he's also the kind of player who draws a scout's eyes with his style of play. Give the game just an inning or so and he will be dirty from head to toe. You can't help but be drawn to his energy and effort and in considering all a catcher is asked to do, leading by example in regard to hard work and effort, the intangibles rate highly.

Beyond all of that, it IS the tools that ultimately will provide future opportunities for a player, whether that is making a summer showcase team, or securing a scholarship opportunity and of course being selected in the MLB Draft. Plascencia has plenty of tools; he a 7.04 60-yard (have seen him get below 7.00 on previous occasions), made 82 mph throws to 2nd base in the workout, popped 1.96-1.98, and with a wood bat off a tee he put up a 89 mph exit velocity.

During the live at-bat portion of the day he caught well, showing deft receiving skills. Plascencia has soft and strong hands, he sits low and presents a good target. He quickly developed a positive working relationship with both pitchers he caught and adjusted quickly to their repertoires, which should be taken lightly in a scenario when most of the catchers had not previously been in the squat for the pitchers they worked with.

He is an above average athlete and it shows in his bounce out of the crouch on block and recover situations. Plascencia shifts well both left and right and has agility that provides above average lateral range behind the plate. There are catchers who have a little more in the tank in regard to raw arm strength but his quickness/explosion out of the crouch on his throws to bases is second to none in Northern California and allows him to regularly pop below 2.0, sometimes quite a bit lower than that.

Offensively he barreled balls and drove balls with power from gap to gap and has shown home run power in previous game viewings. He was on time and routinely made loud contact in the three round BP session. He drives his back hip through and creates good leverage in his lower half, maintaining balance through a physical and violent swing. He showed a consistent hand path, working inside the ball but getting the barrel in a power position while staying behind the baseball.
