STOCKTON, CA. - The 2019 MLB Draft was completed on June 5th and on June 9th we started to look toward the 2020 draft class at the Northern California ProCase. A select group of players were invited to participate in this exclusive event geared toward draft prospects and high level collegiate talents with future draft potential. Players were put through a pro-style workout with various stats/data recorded during the workouts which can be found HERE

RHP Joey Soberon (Clayton Valley Charter HS)

2020 RHP Joey Soberon (UC-San Diego Commit) listed at 6-1, 195 with a wide and firm build showing strength throughout the frame and the durability to go out and be a regular weekend starter at the next level. Soberon was uncommitted at the time of the event, and went out and pitched like a man on a mission as he attacked the zone and hitters.

Soberon's delivery has tempo and rhythm with the hands starting at the waist through small side-step before lifting up to the chin with the high front leg; delivery shows the athletic ability he has and loose hips finishing with intent over the firm front leg that braces the body well. Soberon creates strong drift down the mound starting with his back hip allowing him to stay connected to the rubber for a long time. The arm has some length out of the glove with a clean break keeping the arm tight to the body through the quick swing and getting to it's H-3/4 fluidly; he repeats his delivery well and the arm staying close to the body allows pitches to jump on hitters.

During the event, Soberon went right after hitters working quickly and showing plus tempo on the hill. The FB (87-89 T90 MPH) showed excellent angle showing the ability to put it at hitters knees before going up the ladder. He pounded both sides of the plate and got some ugly swings on the pitch when he got it under barrels. The CHG (80-81 MPH) was late with hard bottom at the plate using it down through the zone to hitters on both sides of the plate; another one that got swing and misses and flashes as an above-average to plus type of pitch. Soberon also has a CB, but was so effective with the FB/CHG combination during his outing he kept the pitch in his back pocket; we saw the pitch during the spring with 11-to-5 shape showing two-level depth and the ability to buckle a hitter.

Soberon has the build and combination of three-pitches to be a workhorse starter at the next level. I've been particularly impressed by his commitment and focus on continuing to get better and attack hitters with his stuff. The confidence shows up on the mound and I see some more upside as Soberon continues to pitch.
