STOCKTON, CA. - The 2019 MLB Draft was completed on June 5th and on June 9th we started to look toward the 2020 draft class at the Northern California ProCase. A select group of players were invited to participate in this exclusive event geared toward draft prospects and high level collegiate talents with future draft potential. Players were put through a pro-style workout with various stats/data recorded during the workouts which can be found HERE

INF Andrew Neil (Freedom HS)

2020 INF Andrew Neil (UC Santa Barbara commit) is listed at 5-11, 160 showing a lean, firm muscled build that is twitchy, athletic and very agile; the strength in the frame is present and there might be a little bit of growth still available. Neil glides down the line utilizing his fast legs to get to full speed very quickly as shown by his 6.78 60yd run at the event. It's not just straight line speed though, as Neil is able to show short burst on the defensive side of the field and his speed plays well getting down the line or stealing bases.

At the plate, Neil has one of my favorite left-handed swings in the regions where he utilizes a wide base sitting with a slight crouch and keeping a very simple and quiet setup with small sway of the hands back while there is a slight foot lift. The simplicity in his swing allows his head to stay still, track the ball and allow the body to rotate smoothly showing quick bat speed as he works level and firm through the zone with a full two-handed finish. Neil shows the feel for the barrel able to spray balls from gap-to-gap with consistent hard contact having balls jump off (88 EV); the swing is designed to create hard extra-base hits into gaps with consistent contact. His rounds of BP were solid as he showed that ability to spray the ball from line to line.

Defensively he's got all the fundamentals to stick at the shortstop position going forward, with the knowledge and experience of playing a high-level second base as well; last season he was matched with 2019 2nd Round pick Kyren Paris at Freedom HS. The feet are agile with that short burst action to cover ground, yet Neil plays controlled as he works low and through the baseball. The glove is soft and pairs well with his strong arm that keeps balls online showing life through their target (85 MPH); strength in the arm and quick release around the bag shows his instincts and ability to stay in the middle of the diamond.

Versatile middle-infielders with the bat-to-ball skills that Neil has are the perfect fit atop of batting orders in the college level and Neil continues to show that profile. Speed, defense, a sweet left-handed swing and an easy-going, yet competitive demeanor give Neil a deep set of tools to work with going into his Senior season.
