AMERICAN CANYON, CA. - We don't know what will take place with remainder of the 20219 high school season, so our look at 2021 CF Tyree Reed on 3/13/20 very well be the final look at him in a high school game for the season.

Reed, a multiple time Team USA member/contributor, he put up the following line in 69 plate appearances (16 games) as a sophomore: 481 BA / .565 OBP / .730 SLG / 1.296 OPS / 5 2B / 3 3B / 19 RBI / 20 R / 9 BB / 5 HBP / 7 K / 8 SB - and also reach via error another six times. The raw power has been hiding under the surface and has started to show up this spring, with his first home run happening recently.

At 6-foot-2, 185-pounds, Reed is the player your eyes immediately are drawn to when showing up at the field for pre-game. Watching him interact with his teammates before the game is a glimpse into how much one of the nation's top players is very much just one of the guys and how much he enjoys being a teammate. During pre-game INF/OF he gets his work in, moving calmly to the balls hit his way and making accurate throws. Doesn't generally let his best bolt fly but we've seen him up to 89 mph from the OF, so it stands to reason he's over 90 mph since the last time we saw him really let it go. He's a long strider who roams the gaps and frequently ends the hopes of many an extra base hit.

Reed will have future plus grades for Arm, Defense, Run, probably will get an average grade for future power (16-23 HR) though a 45 (near average) will probably be in a great many reports for clubs that allow 45s. Ultimately the hit tool grade will determine where he goes in the 2021 draft. A team that puts a future average grade on his hit tool (.265-.279) and sees him as an everyday contributor in CF will have him higher than a club that isn't as high on the future hit tool.

Scouting Report

2020 Game vs Alhambra HS - Oregon State commit, presently ranked #2 in CA, #9 nationally; Started the game in CF and hitting in the 2-spot in the order, going 2-for-4, R. Handled three chances in the outfield and wasn't really tested with anything other than ordinary plays, especially given his outstanding range. At the plate is where the most scrutiny of Reed takes place, as the defense, arm and run tools are all clearly present. He starts up in the box, with a squared stance and his first lower body move sees him stride to a closed position, which has been a mechanic present since my first look at him priory to his freshman year. High back elbow to start. He's quite good on the pitch down and in and has the hand-eye coordination to put barrel to ball up in the zone. Stays closed with the front side which shows up positively vs LHPs. Can work to stay behind the change-up better and be softer to the front side. Bat speed and strength ARE present to develop usable power and should more regularly show up with a more in-line stride. Glides around the bases with aggressive turns and instincts show up very well when going 1st to 3rd. As with all HS offensive players, the hit tool will be front and center in the eyes of the scouts as the 2021 draft comes around.

2019 Area Code Underclass Tryouts - Under Class Notebook

2019 Game vs Casa Grande HS - Ranked #7 among California 2021 grads at time of this report and also nationally ranked. He's also a been a Team USA contributing player and is not lacking for significant professional projectability. Presently uncommitted but not lacking opportunities as he is one of the nation's elite talents. Physically he is long and sinewy and likely won't ever be bulky and physical. He's built along the lines of Dexter Fowler/Byron Buxton body type, but not as tall as Fowler. He's a L/L player with plus speed, a plus arm, plus range and closing ability, strong communication skills with teammates on defense. Offensively he has plenty of bat speed and with his footspeed he can put pressure on the defense. On the bases he is a glider, with easy strides picking up lots of ground quickly. The swing and overall approach are still works in progress. He can get a little closed off with his stride which can cause him some trouble on the inside pitch if he doesn't clear his hips on time. Showed ability to drive the ball in a two-strike count but also chased a couple of breaking balls in the dirt for strikeouts. Has basestealing speed and can unnerve pitchers on the bases.
