ROSEVILLE, CA - Anticipation and expectations for this loaded event were quickly validated with impressive TrackMan and Blast Motion metrics. Many players saw their metrics make improvements while newcomers discovered them for the first time and the value that they hold.  However, the annual Preseason All-State event isn't complete without a detailed scouting report from the Prep Baseball Report scouting staff. In this addition we dive into Underclass Infielders.

Blake Schaaf, Head-Royce, 2023
Positional Profile: SS/2B
Body: 5-10, 155-pounds. Lean frame, high waist with some strength present.
Hit: LHH. Open stance, high hands with lift on the higher front knee coiled load. Good direction and ability to adjust lower half to pitch height Quick hands showing ability to be in zone for awhile. Adjusted bat to different locations well in BP. 67 MPH Max Batspeed, 20.8 Max Handspeed, 13gs Max Rotational Acceleration, 65% On Plane Efficiency
Power: 88.10 mph exit velocity.
Arm: RH. INF - 77.00 mph. Loose and easy compact arm. Able to make all throws now and keeps it on the bag while on the move.
Defense: Very quick feet, moves easily all over diamond and ability to funnel with easy glove actions. Skills to stick at SS position.
Run: 7.31 runner in the 60. 

Brock Thompson, Liberty, 2024
Positional Profile: SS/2B
Body: 5-8, 145-pounds. Proportional smaller frame with lean, long muscle; projectable as physical maturity kicks in
Hit: LHH. Open stance, toe-tap timing with ability to stay locked on frontside; gets into ground and stay behind baseball. Loose, easy swing with quick hanspeed through the zone. Compact swing designed to impact the baseball with gap-to-gap carry. 21.7 Max Handspeed, 64.2 Max Batspeed, 55% On Plane Efficiency, 60% Line Drives
Power: 89.00 mph exit velocity.
Arm: RH. INF - 76.00 mph. Short and compact arm action. Above average arm strength for a freshman. Needs extra gather to get off throws. 4/5 accurate throws in defensive work.
Defense: Fields low to the ground and in the center of his body. Decent glove skills. Sees ball all the way into his glove. Slower in setting up feet for throws. As speed improves so will the overall defensive tools
Run: 7.93 runner in the 60. 

Benjamin Reiland, Orange Lutheran, 2024
Positional Profile: OF/SS
Body: 5-8, 140-pounds. Long lanky frame, athleticism present and projects well for more growth
Hit: LHH. Balanced stance hands higher at back elbow with easy, relaxed base. Stays on back hip well with quiet forward move In the zone a long time with simple, compact swing. Hand speed/rotational acceleration present now and chance to be above-average to better hit tool. 20.2 Max Rotational Acceleration, 20 Max Handspeed, 66.9 Max Batspeed, 67% On Plane Efficiency
Power: 90.40 mph exit velocity
Arm: RH. INF - 70.00 mph. OF - 81 mph. From the OF he has a compact arm circle that comes out of the over the top slot and most throws were accurate one hops to the bag. In infield his arm action was short and quick and from a lower 3/4 slot. Didn't rush his throws which gave him all accurate throws. Also showed ability to change arm slot when needed.
Defense: In the OF he charged balls hard, fielded them on his left foot and was able to quickly set his feet up for throws. In the infield is where he looked more comfortable. Has + glove skills and takes good angles. Funnels up the body and has clean exchanges from glove to release.
Run: 7.28 runner in the 60. 

Tyler Shulman, Calabasas, 2023
Positional Profile: SS/2B
Body: 5-11, 155-pounds. V shaped upper-half with lean strength and physical projection
Hit: LHH. Narrow, tall stance with high front knee lift. Steps a bit cross-body using frontside to stop forward motion and create reciprocal tension Compact swing doing most of his damage out front of home and sticking to the middle/pullside. Some projection in swing designed to hit hard liners. 63% On Plane Efficiency, 65.8 Max Batspeed, 17 Max Handspeed, 12.5 gs Max Rotational Acceleration, 70% Line Drive %
Power: 85.00 mph exit velocity
Arm: RH. INF - 77.00 mph. Loose and short arm action out of the lower 3/4 slot. Showed decent carry across the diamond. 4/5 accurate throws.
Defense: Stays low to the ground and keeps lower body in rhythm to quickly get off throws. Solid defensive actions as he looked solid to both the backhand and forehand side as well as coming in.
Run: 7.55 runner in the 60. 

Andrew Witt, Garces Memorial, 2024
Positional Profile: SS/C
Body5-9, 145-pounds. Square shoulders on an athletic frame with projectable space and quick feet.
HitRHH. Open stance, knees tight, weight in the backside with high hands. Stays in hinge well with the forward move allowing hands to stay at back shoulder. Head stays on the plate with good posture. Short, compact swing staying connected well and allowing hands to get out to contact in front of the body. Stays inside pitches well wearing out RCF/Middle of the field. 19.2 gs Max Rotational Acceleration, 18.5 Max Handspeed, 79% On Plane Efficiency, 61.9 Max Batspeed.
Power82.70 mph exit velocity.
ArmRH. C - 75.00 mph. INF - 80.00 mph. At C he showed a short quick arm action that was released on a more downward angle for majority one-hop throwdowns. Similar arm action at short where his throws flashed decent carry across the diamond and he was 4/5 on accurate throws. 
Defense2.10-2.25 pop times. At C showed average foot quickness but clean footwork in
terms of setting up his feet in good positions to make throws. Showed comfort at SS with his actions. Moved well to both sides and fielded out in front. Lacks fluidity as he slows himself down when fielding which hurts time to release. 
Run6.97 runner in the 60.

JP Acosta, Buchanan, 2023
Positional Profile: SS/2B
Body: 5-11, 165-pounds. Long and lanky frame with plenty of space for more projection. Lots of athleticism in the frame
Hit: SH. RH: Loose and relaxed at the plate with higher front leg kick keeping connection with ground. Controlled approach to the baseball allowing the lower half to get swing started.
LH: Similar looseness, kick in load; a little bit more rock into the backside/frontside on LH. More rotational this side. Quick and fluid rotation allowing him to unwind through the zone and let quick hands do work out front. RH more natural right now with LH being a bit steeper, but the skills are present to be a strong switch-hitter at next level. 17.8 gs Max Rotational Acceleration, 22.6 Max Handspeed, 72.4 Max Batspeed, 55% On Plane Efficiency.
Power: 93.50 mph exit velocity.
Arm: RH. INF - 84.00 mph. Above average arm strength for level. Short and whippy arm action. Quick in getting to release. 3/5 accurate throws in defensive workout.
Defense: Showed light and quick feet. Sets up his feet in good positions to set up momentum towards 1st. Very strong rhythm and timing with his fielding. Soft hands and clean exchanges as well.
Run: 7.32 runner in the 60. 

Luke Kalfsbeek, Colusa, 2024
Positional Profile: LHP/1B
Hit: RHH. Squatted stance, keeping flat barrel on back shoulder before hand pump in load. Gets to the front foot early allowing handspeed to take over. Steeper barrel/hands working to backspin ball through middle. Handspeed present and ability to get on plane. Best contact was low liners. 75% On Plane Efficiency, 22.9 Max Handspeed, 67.5 Max Batspeed, 12.8 gs Max Rotational Acceleration.
Power: 75.00 mph exit velocity
Arm: LH. INF - 82.00 mph. Loose and quick arm action especially on DPs. 3/4 accurate throws in defensive workout.
Defense: Good footwork as he is light on his feet and keeps his rhythm when fielding. Is good moving around the bag.
Run: 7.96 runner in the 60. 

William McCoy, Willows, 2024
Positional Profile: 3B
Body: 5-10, 185-pounds. Strong build, with present strength on lower half and space to still add.
Hit: RHH. Open, squatted with high back elbow and knees inward. Hands pull back early with the knees closing gap. Hips work well with frontside staying open in swing. Steeper hands work down and stay with body in rotation. Best swings allowed for him to get behind the ball earlier and spray liners around the middle of the field. 70 Max Batspeed, 20.3 Max Handspeed, 50% Line Drives.
Power: 83.60 mph exit velocity
Arm: RH. INF - 75.00 mph. Wider arm, showed good actions with more velocity coming.
Defense: Worked around the ball well and had ability to show some lateral range. Times where he showed good adjustability to hops hits at him.
Run: 7.86 runner in the 60. 

Gregory Palamountain, Campolindo, 2023
Positional Profile: SS/OF
Body: 5-10, 175-pounds. Very long and projectable frame with athleticism there and strength currently
Hit: SH. Open, even hands sitting in hinge early. Slight kick stays over the backside before forward move. Attacking posture and tighter hips allow him to stop quickly. Keeps good spacing between arms and allows him to get the barrel into the zone and through it easily. Hands carry through with strong upward finish. On Plane early and ability to hold direction through baseball. 17 gs Max Rotational Acceleration, 20.6 Max Handspeed, 68 Max Batspeed, 81% On Plane Efficiency
Power: 88.40 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. INF - 80.00 mph. OF - 87 mph. Compact depth at both INF/OF positions; throws were online and showed firm actions to locations. Bits of run from INF.
Defense: OF attacked with online routes to the bases. INF showed athleticism on the dirt moving well through the ball.
Run: 6.94 runner in the 60. 

Jack Surdey, St. Francis, 2023
Positional Profile: SS/RHP
Body: 6-2, 165-pounds. Very lean and long frame; plenty of space to add more girth easily
Hit: RHH. Open, relaxed stance with higher hand start. Later hand load timed with front leg reach. Hands stay with the body well getting extension through the ball in front of plate. Best swings when he had more top hand control to stay above baseball and through with direction. 69.7 Max Batspeed, 21.3 Max Handspeed.
Power: 85.00 mph exit velocity.
Arm: RH. INF - 79.00 mph. Short and whippy arm action. Above average arm strength for level. 3/5 accurate throws in defensive workout.
Defense: Takes good angles and gets low to the ball. Fields out in front and centered. Slower exchanges and time to release.
Run: 7.10 runner in the 60.               

Finley Buckner, Oaks Christian, 2023
Positional Profile: OF/SS
Body: 6-1, 170-pounds. Long and width in the frame with lanky limbs. Very athletic, present strength and still plenty of projection
Hit: RHH. Tall stance, loose and relaxed with high hands and high back elbow. Early rhythm before bigger leg kick/tuck coiling around rear hip with hands staying in position. Kicks back side allowing hips to stop very well and create great direction through the middle of the field. Easy barrel path through the zone with quick hands. Short and compact swing gets on plane early and stays inside the baseball. Very repeatable swing. 70% On Plane Efficiency, 71.5 Max Batspeed, 21.4 Max Handspeed, 55.6% Line Drives.
Power: 91.70 mph exit velocity.
Arm: RH. INF - 79.00 mph. OF - 82 mph. Easy full swing in both the OF and INF. From OF throws had bits of tail that he knew and used well. INF throws stayed on target with good carry.
Defense: Athletic actions at both positions. OF looked more fluid with ability to work through the baseball. INF had a strong funnel and ability to catch and get rid of it.
Run: 6.91 runner in the 60. 

Justin Iglesias, Bishop O'Dowd, 2024
Positional Profile: 1B/RHP
Body: 6-3, 175-pounds. Very large, squared frame with plenty of room for filling in and continuing to grow.
Hit: LHH. Tall with high hands and high back elbow; slow and early load has hands work down and back. Stays on backside with firm front leg. Into zone deep while finishing upwards high over front shoulder. Handspeed takes over and showed he could line ball hard over MIF heads. 72.1 Max Batspeed, 21.1 Max Handspeed, 11.7 gs Max Rotational Acceleration.
Power: 87.60 mph exit velocity.
Arm: RH. INF - 73.00 mph. Short wristy arm action, especially on DPs. All accurate throws in the workout.
Defense: Average defensive actions and glove skills. Good footwork around the bag.
Run: 7.47 runner in the 60.                                                                                                 

Ryan Limerick, Notre Dame, 2023
Positional Profile: OF/LHP
Body: 6-0, 185-pounds. Strong and physical in the build with athleticism present. Will continue to improve as he matures
Hit: LHH. Squatted stance, relaxed hands at back shoulder and bat flat there. Quick front lift and hand pullback getting into the ground and frontside well with strong hip drive. Early in his rounds was steeper and pushing into zone before adjusting with better actions to stick under his shoulders. Staying behind the ball allowed him to drive liners through the middle/pullside. 70.7 Max Batspeed, 59% On Plane Efficiency, 20.9 Max Handspeed, 11.7 gs Max Rotational Acceleration.
Power: 90.00 mph exit velocity 
Arm: LH. INF - 81.00 mph. OF - 82 mph. Short arm action from both the OF and 1B. Higher arcing accurate throws from the OF. DP thows were accurate to the chest.
Defense: In the OF he charges in on balls hard and uses a large crow hop. Plays low to the ball and transition from field to throw was smooth. Athleticism will allow him to play any outfield spot.  Solid defensive actions at 1B as well both in fielding and around the bag.
Run: 7.22 runner in the 60.                                                                                                   

Camden Rush, Downey, 2023
Positional Profile: SS/3B
Body: 6-2, 175-pounds. High waist, lean strength with wider shoulders. Space to keep adding.
Hit: RHH. Wide and tall stance, balanced and loose with early bat tips for rhythm. Toe Tap rhythm without much of a load; stays in position and fires the hips when he wants. Hand path stays above the baseball allowing the barrel to follow. With barrel tip early swing can get handsy but is loose finding upward path post contact. Stayed behind fairly well and produced liners to pullside OF. 66.1 Max Batspeed, 19.8 Max Handspeed,
Power: 87.50 mph exit velocity
Arm: RH. INF - 80.00 mph. Compact arm regularly on the bag. Stayed with the body on different throws.
Defense: Easy footwork and ability to range laterally on display.
Run: 7.29 runner in the 60. 

Casey Borba, Orange Lutheran, 2023
Positional Profile: 3B/1B
Body: 6-0, 200-pounds. Physical build, strength present with lean muscles currently. Projects for next level
Hit: RHH. High hands, open stance with anchored backside. Slight kick allows him to stay in hinge and rotate when he wants to. Lower half is strong and able to control forward move before stopping and getting firm. Powerful swing with great rotations and handspeed to get through the zone. Very good feel for the barrel and ability to be on time and in the zone for a long time. Easy linedrives jumping off the bat to the middle of the field with great direction; power there and will be an asset. 19 gs Max Rotational Acceleration, 73.6 Max Batspeed, 22 Max Handspeed, 63% On Plane Efficiency, 55.6 Hard Hit%
Power: 93.70 mph exit velocity
Arm: RH. C -  mph. INF - 74.00 mph. OF -  mph. Loose and easy arm action from 3B. Time to release was quick. Ability to throw from different angles when need be. 4/5 accurate throws in the workout.
Defense: Probably the best defensive actions over any 3B in the underclass event. Showed light feet and soft hands. Angles his feet and body towards 1B when fielding to avoid waisted movement. Clean funnel up the body and exchanges were fluid.
Run: 7.58 runner in the 60. 

Nolan Stevens, Franklin, 2023
Positional Profile: 1B/LHP
Body: 6-3, 210-pounds. Strong, Large frame with plenty of current strength and space to continue adding more at full maturity. Projects to next level.
Hit: LHH. Hands at back shoulder with high back elbow and slight bend in knees. Loads slowly as he hinges and rotates around the back hip allowing him to control forward move. Hips start/stop very well allowing for great direction. Hands stay with the body very well through rotation before extending through the baseball. Feel for the barrel present and understanding of what he does well. Explosive swing able to drive through contact to the pullside/middle of the field. Barrel stays in the zone a long time. 78.3 Max Batspeed, 56% On Plane Efficiency, 22.5 Max Handspeed, 16 gs Max Rotational Acceleration, 93.49 Avg EV, 80% Hard Hit.
Power: 97.80 mph exit velocity.
Arm: LH. INF - 89.00 mph. OF - 85 mph. Plus arm for either OF or 1B Position. Compact actions and ability to dial it up when he needs it.
Defense: OF: Rushed body a bit during grounders with some times where he worked out of sequence. Best ones allowed his throws to have firm carry online. 1B: Handled the bag fine with ability to keep head down and behind the glove for scoops. Moved with athleticism off the bag attacking the ball.
Run: 7.23 runner in the 60. 

Jarren Ford, Will C Wood, 2023
Positional Profile: 1B/3B
Body: 6-0, 220-pounds. Large, wide and thick frame. Strength present in the frame and plenty of time to tighten the frame.
Hit: RHH. Slightly opened, even hands high back elbow setup; small kick allowing him to rotate around back hip and sink into back hip. Great balance and rotation from the body with strong posture. Powerful upward path with plenty of strength behind swings. Ball jumps off the barrel when he's working his best with easy pullside power and gap carry. Feel for the barrel and ability to see and hit pitches in game play. 22.3 gs Max Rotational Acceleration, 75.2 Max Batspeed, 22.7 Handspeed, 56% On Plane Efficiency, 88.9% Line Drive/Fly Ball %
Power: 97.10 mph exit velocity.
Arm: RH. INF - 65.00 mph. Shorter arm, limited carry and times where he cuts it. Can make throws to 2nd.
Defense: Good actions while on the bag helping INF with throws and showing some ability to work the bag. Can get off the bag and get to the ball.
Run: 8.09 runner in the 60.

Connor Cabauatan, Heritage, 2024
Positional Profile: 3B/SS
Body: 5-7, 155-pounds. Squared shoulders, present strength high waist.
Hit: RHH. Narrow, squatted stance with knees tight, hands tight with slight pull back working well off the back hip. Small hover allows him to adjust to timing. Handsy swing, works off path that stays pullside of the field. Can occassionally lose the barrel, but showed ability to have flashes of carry to pullside. 20.9 Max Handspeed, 64.1 Max Batspeed, 80% Flyball/Line Drive %
Power: 84.00 mph exit velocity.
ArmRH. INF - 76.00 mph. Reaches back with his arm and sort of slings it across the diamond. All throws were short to the bag but 3/5 of them were intentional accurate short hops. Slower in getting to release.
DefenseShowed light feet and average glove skills. Upper body doesn't get low to the ball. Break in rhythm when fielding.
Run8.08 runner in the 60.
