ROSEVILLE, CA - Anticipation and expectations for this loaded event were quickly validated with impressive TrackMan and Blast Motion metrics. Many players saw their metrics make improvements while newcomers discovered them for the first time and the value that they hold.  However, the annual Preseason All-State event isn't complete without a detailed scouting report from the Prep Baseball Report scouting staff. In this addition we dive into Underclass Pitchers.

Michael Casteneda, Valley Christian, 2023
Positional Profile: RHP
Body: 5-10, 183-pounds. Strong build on athletic frame; firm muscles currently with more space to finish growing
Delivery: Pitches exclusively from the stretch. Compact and repeatable delivery. Uses a high knee lift and syncs it going down with his glove seperation. Everything works and is inline with home. Stiffens up the front leg at landing for good energy transfer.
Arm Action: RH. Longer but compact arm circle in the back. Loose and whippy action. Comes out of the H 3/4 slot. Slots all his pitches the same with similar extension for all also.
FB: T82.5, 79-81 mph. Showed decent spin for its velocity and at times flashed good rise (20.2 max IVB). Located it well low in the zone.
CB: 67-71 mph. Lower spin CB. Used more as a chase pitch down through the zone. Slurvy break with present Horizontal Break.
CH: 72-74 mph. Lower spin CH. Located well low in the zone and at times flashed good armside fade.

Jacob Hudson, Valley Christian, 2023
Positional Profile: RHP                                                                                                    
Body: 5-10, 195-pounds. Thick, strong and powerful frame with present strength throughout and sloped shoulders. Translates to next level
Delivery: Side steps into a medium knee lift. Glove seperation happens in the middle of his chest. Gets good hip-shoulder seperation. Front foot lands in line with home but falls toward the 1B side; better direction down hill when front hip stayed locked.
Arm Action: RH. Loose arm that accelerates late in the action. Comes out of the 3/4 slot. Gets slightly inverted as his arm loads into his scalp. 
FB: T91.5, 88-91 mph. Plus spin FB that had good ride up in the zone. Located it well to both sides of the plate.
SL: 73-74 mph. Plus spin SL that had 19 inches of average horizontal break. Was able to indoor it on RHs along with using it as a chase pitch. 

Luke Kalfsbeek, Colusa, 2024
Positional Profile: LHP
Body: 6-1, 160-pounds. Long, lanky frame with high waist and lots of space for more growth. Projectable frame                                                                                                                                  
Delivery: Side steps into a medium knee tuck. Average stride length and extension. Seperates as his knee comes down. Everything works in line with home throughout.
Arm Action: LH. Loose, full swing arm circle that comes out of the 3/4 slot. Drops his slot slightly on offspeed pitches.
FB: T80.3, 75-80 mph. His FB worked more north/south. Had some good armside tail that helped him miss bats.
SL: 63-68 mph. His highest spin pitch. Was effective both in and outiside the zone. Lower slot than FB.
CH: 71-73 mph. Flashed decent armside fade. Slowed down armside a bit to get that lower velo. Trouble locating it in the zone.

Joshua Pashby, St. Ignatius, 2023
Positional Profile: RHP
Body: 5-11, 180-pounds. Strong, athletic with present strength across chest. Athleticism projects with more space available.                                                                                                  
Delivery: Pitches exclusively from the stretch. Compact and repeatable delivery; lift and drive type of delivery. Quick up/down knee tuck with slight turn. Lands slightly off to the 1B side. Good hip-shoulder seperation.
Arm Action: RH. Quick compact arm action. Higher 3/4 slot. Good arm speed that accelerates as the arm gets up.
FB: T86.3, 84-86 mph. Located it well. Doesn't look like forced velo. Showed decent ride up in the zone.
CB: 75-76 mph. Sharp downward break. Consistently located it low in the zone. Induced many swings and misses.
CH: 75-76 mph. Lower spin changeup. Showed flashes of some fade. Notable slow down of arm speed.

Jack Surdey, St. Francis, 2023
Positional Profile: RHP
Body: 6-2, 165-pounds. Very lean and long frame; plenty of space to add more girth easily        
Delivery: Side steps into a medium knee tuck. Average stride length that is on line with home. Stays closed until landing giving him some good seperation. Overall simple delivery with easy repeatability. Very stable lower half at landing.
Arm Action: RH. Quick compact arm circle in the back and comes out of the H 3/4 slot. Easy velo with minimal effort shows potential for uptick.
FB: T83.5, 80-82 mph. Has some natural cutting action to it and works it more to the glove side. Doesn't leave it middle of the zone.
SL: 71-73 mph. Throws it out of a slightly lower slot. Consistent arm speed and showed ability to throw it for strikes.

Bryan Yang, Ayala, 2024
Positional Profile: RHP
Body: 6-2, 160-pounds. Very long, lanky and agile frame with athleticism there and space for more.
Delivery: Side steps into a higher knee lift. Tall and fall type of delivery as he drops into rubber and pushes off towards home. Steps slightly closed (3B side). Decent stride length and extension as he moves efficiently down the mound. Firm front leg at landing allows for good energy transfer.
Arm Action: RH. Fluid, full arm circle in the back. Comes out loose and whippy out of the H 3/4 slot. Slots his CH/CB higher than his FB/SL.
FB: T81.8, 77-81 mph. Located to all quadrants of the zone. Showed some swing and miss up.
SL: 65-68 mph. More Slurvy break, tight and short; decent horizontal break. Effective as a chase pitch.
CH: 70-74 mph. Consistent arm speed on the pitch. Nice armside fade/tail. 

Alec Belardes, Valley Christian, 2023
Positional Profile: RHP
Body: 6-1, 190-pounds. Wide and strong frame with current strength there. Big hands/feed suggest more growth in near future.
Delivery: Small side step with average front leg lift. Controlled effort having hands break on knee. Front side stopped forward momentum; times where spun off the front hip.
Arm Action: RH. Loose, full swing to M-3/4 release point. When front side was better directionally, better ability to repeat release point
FB: T84.12, 81-84 mph. Small cut to the gloveside, good spin for pitch and best ones had better angle. 2302 Max Spin, 19.6 Max IVB, 9.2 Max HB.
SL: 69-71 mph. Late, crossplate action. Very strong horizontal break and plus spin for age/shape. Hand drops a bit compared to FB. 2585 Max Spin, -21.2 Max HB

Justin Iglesias, Bishop O'Dowd, 2024
Positional Profile: 1B/RHP
Body: 6-3, 175-pounds. Very large, squared frame with plenty of room for filling in and continuing to grow.                                                                                                                        
Delivery: High front knee tuck, before landing with soft bend in front knee. Stopped the hip well; better finish/carry on pitches when he got over the front leg on finish. Ball was hidden until the very end.
Arm Action: RH. High over the top release, easy action with deception in ability to pick it up.
FB: T79.8, 77-79 mph. Firm in the zone using both glove and arm side. Can get to good vertical break (20.9 Max) and more coming
CB: 59-63 mph. More horizontal then vertical action with similar release height as FB.Depth occurring at the plate.
SL: 63-66 mph. Blends closely with the CB having similar horizontal break and release height.

Andrew Johnson, Capistrano Valley Christian, 2024
Positional Profile: RHP/OF
Body: 6-2, 175-pounds. Projectable frame with lots of length and lean strength currently; athleticism to make strides quickly.
Delivery: Athletic delivery with very high front knee; hands breaking on the knee. Generally down the hill with good extension especially on FB.
Arm Action: RH. Full swing with depth out to 3/4 release. Kept a consistent release point for all pitches and held velocity over two innings pitched.
FB: T81.1, 77-80 mph. Will get some ride with vertical break (19.5 Vertical Max). Pitched enough in the zone, times where he battled control
CB: 64-66 mph. Overhand shape, plays well off riding FB with good vertical break and better spin for the age; developable pitch.
CH: 73 mph. Sold it well; didn't use it much and looks like it could be a solid third pitch.

Ryan Limerick, Notre Dame, 2023
Positional Profile: LHP 
Delivery: Exclusive from the stretch. Simple and repeatable delivery. Knee lift is quick up and down. Works towards the target with not much waisted movement or energy.
Arm ActionLH. Short and quick arm action. Arm stab has turned into a more compact arm circle in the back that comes back up out of the H 3/4 slot.
FBT81, 78-80 mph. Didn't allow it to catch too much zone. Used it mostly to the gloveside.
CB70-72 mph. Got it over for strikes and threw it towards the backleg of RHs.
SL70 mph. True slider with basically no vertical break.
CH70-74 mph. Nice armside fade and located it low in the zone.

Tyler Patrick, Clovis West, 2024
Positional Profile: RHP
Body: 6-1, 185-pounds. Projectable, young frame with good strength currently and more space to fill as he ages.                                                                                                                              
Delivery: Simple delivery with hands staying at the chest, breaking around the waist. Front leg control and average lift; stopped the body down the hill and showed good direction. Moxy on the hill and chance to make future jumps
Arm Action: RH. Compact, repeatable 3/4 release. Kept similar release height on all pitches. Easy actions project more jumps.
FB: T83.2, 80-82 mph. Able to work up/down in zone and glove side. Worked in teh zone and out of it with flashes of ride when going up (21.2 Max Vertical Break)
CB: 65-67 mph. Overhand pitch with good depth (-20.8 Vertical Break). Able to use through the zone and into the zone.
CH: 72-74 mph. Early in the count pitch and able to use it to finish AB's. Flashed strong run which projects well (17.5 Max Horizontal)

Myles Standish, Eureka, 2023
Positional Profile: LHP
Body: 5-10, 172-pounds. Soft, young body with coordination and flexibility; projects to tighten/strengthen quickly
Delivery: Quick delivery with small tuck at top of lift. Gets good, lean down the hill early and controls momentum; frontside did well firming up and allowing him to consistently repeat the mechanics. Plus tempo attacking hitters during his two innings.
Arm Action: LH. Wider, 3/4 release. Loose and easy arm action up on time and getting consistent extension. Helps all pitches play up off similar release.
FB: T78.3, 76-78 mph. In the zone life attacking hitters; small run arm side, life up in zone (21.6 Max IVB, -18.5 Max HB). More coming as the body matures.
CB: 69 mph. Flashed downer action with a similar profile to SL.
SL: 66-68 mph. Horizontal flashing some bite on short, sweepy action. Used for swing and miss and weak contact. Chance for average or better at full maturity
CH: 69-72 mph. Armside run and bottom. Sells the pitch well. (-17.8 HB, 15.9 IVB Max)

Ross Clark, Orange Lutheran, 2024
Positional Profile: RHP
Body: 6-4, 185-pounds. Very long, lean strength with shoulders carrying strength now and projecting to be very well built at full maturity
Delivery: Stretch only. Glove stays at waist with simple drift/drive delivery. Easily repeatable and athletic with strong frontside ability; gets front leg to stop body on shorter stride. Delivery/Body Projections to be one of better 2024 Arms.
Arm Action: RH. Compact, H-3/4 release. Stays in the pocket really well and fluid actions staying attached to the body till late. Ball is hidden well with the ability to come out to release point quickly.
FB: T84.4, 81-83 mph. Heavier pitch plays well with ability to attack armside and glove side. (14.3 HM, 19.5 IVB Max)
SL: 67-69 mph. Short and fluid break; consistent actions and tight spin (-18.6 Max HB). Projects for big jumps at full maturity. 

Noah Andrunas, Gahr, 2023
Positional ProfileRHP
Body: 6-0, 185-pounds. Strong upperhalf with rolled strength in shoulders, some athleticism and projectability available.
DeliveryClean repeatable delivery. Side steps into a quick up and down knee lift. Glove seperation at the chest. Stays in line with his lower half. Gets good hip-shoulder seperation. Lands with a firm front leg
Arm ActionRH. Short compact arm circle in the back. Arm accelerates late in the delivery as it comes out of the H 3/4 slot. Decent extension out front.
FBT84.8, 81-84 mph. Located it consistently in the zone. When he missed he missed up. Flashed some armside tail.
SL68-69 mph. Decent horizontal break. Ran it away from RHs.
CH75-76 mph. Gets good extension on it. Decent fade. Could grow into a quality out pitch.
