Prep Baseball Report

Senior Games: Outfielder Analysis

Russ Morgan
SoCal Area Scout

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA - The inaugural Prep Baseball Report California Senior Games took place at JSerra High School and attracted close to 60 top uncommitted seniors from across the state. There was one committed pitcher, Jeremy Wiegman (Huntington Beach HS), that participated. Wiegman committed to Cal State San Marcos a couple days before the event and still came out. Thanks, Jeremy. Shortly after the event, within a matter of hours another player committed. This time it was Connor Brady who committed to Pt. Loma Nazarene.

We will continue to break down players evaluations, video, and our own scouting notes and post content around that.

But for now, let's take a look at the outfielders from the California Senior Games. Click on each players profile for their full videos from the event.

Scouting Report

11/10/2018 - California Senior Games - Five-foot-10, 163-pounds, medium/large frame that is thick and sturdy throughout. Strength in the lower half that he uses very well to generate present loud contact at the plate from an upright and balanced setup. A rhythmic hitter, Guzman shows fast hands with excellent barrel control through the hitting zone. Smoked a line drive later in the game that was caught, but showed excellent feel/control of the barrel through the zone on a fastball away. Registered an 85 mph exit velocity. Defensively he showed off his huge arm - an event best 92 mph outfield velo - both during the workout and in-game where he his quickness to balls and his arm kept runners at bay at least twice. Accuracy was above average as most balls arrived to the bag on a rope. Would be interesting to see Guzman on the mound as his release is similar to that of a pitchers' at his size.

Scouting Report

11/10/2018 California Senior Game - Six-foot-2, 185-pounds, large, strong, physical, athletic frame that is loose and limber. Vultaggio has the physical characteristics of a ballplayer and he uses them to his advantage on the field. An excellent runner, Vultaggio shows an understanding of angles in the outfield and the ability to steal bases as a baserunner as demonstrated by his easy first-to-third on what started as a steal but ended up a hit-and-run in the game. A present average arm in terms of velocity what he lacks there he makes up for with his accuracy and instincts reading the ball off the bat. His power is projectable at the plate as he continues to iron things out, for now he’s a gap-to-gap guy with the ability to run into one an hit it out. His BP was loud and he showed a couple of very good in-game at-bats one resulting in a walk after falling behind.
