The SoCal Underclass Trials came to Eastlake High School in San Diego on July 17th. With over 60 players in attendance, there was a bevy of talent on display for the over dozen college coaches in attendance to view.

As part of our coverage we will be rolling out top position players from the event before rolling out our Top Prospects.

In this edition we will take a look at standout outfielders from the showcase.

Top Outfielders At SoCal Underclass Trials II

Lewis Barnum OF / 2B / Cathedral Catholic , CA / 2020

Barnum is an athletic outfielder that is well put together and projects for added mass/strength. The arm is strong - Barnum had the best outfield velocity (83) - with throws that are accurate  and flash carry. Barnum shows athleticism in his footwork and routes to the ball as he gathers out front and in a single motion is ready to throw. Barnum has an easy, line drive path swing that consistently barrels ball from a balanced stance with an all-fields approach. His hands are very fast and allow him to catch up to balls inside and drive them to the right side. With added strength and physical maturity Barnum should see a spike in his overall power.

Matthew Conda OF / RHP / Eastlake, CA / 2020

Conda is a lean framed outfielder that oozes projection in his overall game. The bat may be a little ahead of the glove now which is a bit uncommon for a player who is going into his first varsity season. He showed the ability to hit balls to all fields on a line and consistently with fast hands from a slightly open stance. There is some power projection as he was abusing the gaps with line drives during batting practice. In the outfield his arm plays now with accurate throws from a short release. Conda's speed/athleticism project well for a corner position beyond high school.

Connor Ludwig OF / Point Loma, CA / 2020

Ludwig is a lean, wiry strong, long legged, high waisted athletic outfielder who shows excellent defensive actions to go with an accurate and developing arm that has some strength. Should see improvement in his arm strength with continued physical maturation. Takes good routes to the ball while under control of his body and wastes no movements/motions in his exchanges prior to release. At the plate he shows fast hands and a slight uppercut swing path that is consistent and resulted in line drives with occasional loud contact. Remains balanced throughout the swing. Toe tap trigger can get long causing him to lunge at times. When on time the contact is very good.

Jackson Castillo OF / 1B / Rancho Bernardo , CA / 2021

Castillo was a treat to watch throughout the various stations of the showcase. Jackson has some physical traits that project particularly a strong lower half, squared shoulders and a developing upper half. Has a slightly above average arm from the outfield that results in online throws with carry presently. He shows excellent footwork and routes getting to the ball where he scoops out front with clean exchanges before release. At the plate he shows a quiet setup with a still head throughout his swing which starts slightly open. Shows an inside-out barrel path that uses his fast hands to square balls up and drive using an all-fields approach. With continued physical maturation - especially in the upper half - he should see an uptick in power.

Joshua Beecham OF / RHP / Hilltop, CA / 2021

Listed as a primary first baseman Beecham participated in the outfield portion of the workout and really showed well for himself. A long, lean athlete, Beecham has some lower half strength and a high backside which would indicate he’s not done growing and filling out his 6-foot-1 175-pound frame. Shows good footwork and works through the ball while gathering out front. Has current arm strength. At the plate he shows a wide, even stance with a still head throughout the swing. Maintains balance through swing. Shows fast hands and good feel for the barrel with a line-drive bat path that he maintains online through the hitting zone.

Lucas Marrujo OF / RHP / Bonita Vista, CA / 2021

Marrujo immediately caught our scouts attention because of his size at 6-foot 160-pounds and his youthful appearance. Has plenty of room to add mass/strength to his frame. Just turned 15 years old at the end May. After running a 7.33 60, Marrujo stepped into the hitting wheel where he shows a tall and open stance with a balanced swing throughout. Has quick hands which he rocks prior to his short strike to the ball that results in solid contact with an opposite field approach. Shows a slight uppercut path to the ball. Defensively Marrujo shows excellent footwork and body control in the outfield where his arm is strong and accurate with some present carry on his throws. Very athletic player.

Maxime Beaulieu OF / 3B / Rancho Cucamonga , CA / 2020

Beaulieu has the type of frame that you look for at 6-foot-3 and while only 145-pounds he has plenty of room to fill out and add strength to squared shoulder and long, lean body. Shows good defensive actions in the outfield where his arm produces online and accurate throws to the bags/plate. His footwork is good and he shows good body control while taking good routes to the ball. At the plate he shows feel for the barrel with present bat speed - drove one to the left-center-field warning track. Present approach is gap-to-gap with some pull side pop. Beaulieu is a very intriguing prospect who will be a different player once he physically matures and adds strength.
